If you’re a fan of the Marriott Bonvoy program and you enjoy staying at Marriott properties around the world, it would probably make sense for you to hold a Marriott Bonvoy credit card in your wallet.

Of all the Bonvoy cards on the market, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card does the best job of keeping costs low while still offering strong earnings with Marriott and offering benefits that help to offset the card’s annual fee.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card

In brief

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card is Chase’s mid-level Bonvoy credit card that offers credits towards elite status and a free award night every year.

This can be a key card for anyone who visits Marriott properties with any frequency as no credit card earns more Bonvoy Points at Marriott properties than the Boundless card (not even Amex’s $650/year premium Bonvoy card).

Why this is a good card to get

The welcome offer

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is currently offering successful new applicants 125,000 bonus points after they spend $3,000 in the first 3 months from account opening and even though Marriott Bonvoy now uses dynamic award pricing (and not award charts), these points can still be put to good use.

125,000 Bonvoy points will still get you at least one free night at most of Marriott’s high-end properties around the world (sometimes with change) …

… and if you search thoroughly, you’ll find that 125,000 points can get you a couple of nights at a significant number of other very good properties (sometimes even in expensive cities like London).

The free night award that you’ll also receive if you hit the spending target won’t get you a particularly high end property. At best it can book you a night in a standard room costing up to 50,000 points, but it can still be put to very good use.

We’ve used certificates worth less than 50,000 points to book properties which would otherwise have cost $250 – $350, so there’s value to be had here. Just keep in mind that Bonvoy Points are more valuable than Free Night Certificates so don’t assume that this certificate is as valuable as 50,000 points added to your account.

The Marriott earnings

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card offers 6 points per dollar for spending at all Marriott properties worldwide and no other card offers a better return at Marriott properties than this one (not even the $650/year Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Credit Cardrates & fees). If you stay at Marriott properties with any kind of frequency and you don’t want to splash out on a card costing $650/year, this is probably the card for you.

The annual free night certificate

Every anniversary, holders of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card receive a free night certificate which can be used at properties charging up to 35,000 points/night.

Even if you disregard the current welcome bonus and the strong Marriott earnings rate that this card offers, the yearly free night certificate on its own is enough to cover the card’s annual fee year after year.

Also, keep in mind that Marriott now allows Bonvoy members to top up a certificate booking with up to 25,000 points from their accounts so while that is, clearly an additional cost, cardholders are not restricted to properties costing just 35,000 points per night.

Elite night credits

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless cardholders will receive 15 Elite Nights credited to their accounts within 60 days of opening their new account and will continue to see 15 Elite Nights credited to their accounts on or before 1 March every year.

Without setting foot in a Marriott property the Boundless card gets a cardholder 60% of the way to Bonvoy Gold status (25 nights), 30% of the way to Platinum status (50 nights), and 20% of the way to Titanium status (75 nights).

Also, holders of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card can earn 1 elite night credit for every $5,000 that they spend on their card, and while we wouldn’t encourage anyone to give up great earning opportunities offered by other cards just to make the most of this benefit, this could be a good way for those with significant Marriott spending to add to their elite night count.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card can be paired with the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card (review) to earn a total of 30 elite night credits per year (more details on how that works).

These two cards together would automatically give a cardholder Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status every year and would leave them needing just 20 elite night credits to earn valuable Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status.

Ignore

Since February 2022, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card has offers cardholders 3 points/dollar on the first $6,000 spent in combined purchases each year at grocery stores, gas stations, and on dining, but I don’t think anyone should be getting excited about this.

Based on our valuation of Marriott Bonvoy Points (0.6 cents each), this earnings rate only translates to an effective rebate of 1.8%, and there are countless other credit cards out there that will offer a better return.

The excellent Citi® Double Cash credit card, for example, doesn’t charge an annual fee and offers an effective return on all spending of at least 2%, while cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® credit card, the Citi Premier® Card, and the American Express® Gold Card (cards that a lot of miles & points fans already hold) will all offer considerably better returns in one or more of these spending categories.

The opportunity to earn 3 Bonvoy Points per dollar on up to $6,000 of combined spending at grocery stores, at gas stations, and on dining should not be seen as a reason to hold the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card.

Bottom line

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is a solid card for anyone who’s looking to earn the maximum number of points on their Marriott stays without splashing out on a more expensive credit card.

It’s also a card that can be paired with the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card to give a cardholder an impressive boost toward valuable elite status every year.

For travelers who are frequent visitors to Marriott properties year after year, the more premium Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express Card may be a better option (it costs more to hold but it also comes with some benefits that help to offset that cost), but for everyone else, this is probably the best Bonvoy card to hold.
