Chase and Marriott have brought back a promotion that we’ve seen before and this is one that gives Sapphire Reserve cardholders complimentary three months of Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status and gives them a path to keep it through February 2028. The usefulness of this offer is debatable, but here are the details in case this is helpful.
Three months of Bonvoy elite status
Holders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and the J.P. Morgan Reserve® card can now register for three months of complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.
Registration has to be submitted through a card holder’s online Chase account by 30 September 2026.
If you’re not already a Marriott Bonvoy member you’ll need to join first (here), then register the promotion through your Chase account. The Marriott page spelling out the details of this offer says that most registrations are processed within three business days.
Existing Marriott Bonvoy members who already hold Gold Elite status or higher aren’t eligible.
Note: The terms don’t specifically exclude holders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® for Business card, but as that card isn’t mentioned in the terms either, there’s a good chance that this only applies to the consumer card.
Extending the status
The three months of Gold Elite status are complimentary and you get that just for registering. To extend that Gold Elite status through February 2028, you need to complete three qualifying paid nights within those three months (award nights, nights booked with free night certificates, and points + cash bookings are ineligible).
These nights also have to be booked directly with Marriott, so bookings made through OTAs like Expedia, Booking.com, etc… will not qualify.
Interestingly, bookings made through the Chase Travel portal are also not eligible for this promotion.
Stays at Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, and Marriott Vacation Club owner-occupied weeks don’t count either.
If you don’t complete the three nights within your 3 month window, you’ll drop down to whatever Bonvoy level matches the number of qualifying nights you’ve actually stayed during the calendar year.
What Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status gets you
Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status normally requires 25 elite nights in a calendar year and here are the key benefits that it offers:
- 25% bonus points on eligible hotel spending
- Room upgrades, subject to availability at check-in (this doesn’t include suites)
- 2 pm late checkout, subject to availability
- Enhanced internet access
- A welcome gift of points
That’s a, mostly, unimpressive list, and it’s why Bonvoy Gold Elite status isn’t exactly highly coveted.
The upgrades are capped below suites and Gold members come way down the food chain when it comes to upgrade priority and the late checkout isn’t guaranteed, so the only thing that Gold Elite status will definitely offer on a Marriott stay is the bonus points, a welcome gift of points, and “enhanced internet access” (whatever that may be).
Quick thoughts
Is this worth registering for? Yes, if you’re going to be staying at Marriott properties anyway. If you have no plans to stay with Marriott, what’s the point?
The fact is that having some kind of elite status is always better than not having elite status at all when you’re staying at hotels because, at the very least, it should ensure that you don’t get the worst room the property has. So if you’re eligible and have one or more Marriott stays planned, you have nothing to lose.
Whether it’s worth extending past the three months is a different question.
Keep in mind that you can enjoy Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status simply by holding the right credit card, and the cards that offer it aren’t expensive.
The Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card comes with a $125 annual fee, while the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ credit card both cost $250 a year (terms apply).
Compare that to how much three three paid nights at Marriott properties will probably cost and the argument for actively attempting to extend the status looks weak.
Sure, if you were already going to stay three paid nights with Marriott in that window, that’s fine. Make sure you lock in that extension as you’re not going to be paying anything more than you were already planning to pay before this offer came around.
If, however, you would be booking those three nights purely to keep hold the status through February 2028, you’re almost certainly better off paying for a card that gives you Gold Elite status for as long as you hold it, and which comes with a list of other benefits as well.
Bottom line
Holders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and the J.P. Morgan Reserve® card have until 30 September 2026 to register for three months of complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.
Bonvoy Gold Elite status is a mid-tier status that doesn’t offer breakfast and doesn’t guarantee much of anything, but it’s free, and having some status with Marriott beats having none if you happen to be staying at Marriott properties.
But think carefully before booking any paid nights solely to extend this status. Bonvoy Gold Elite isn’t, by any definition, an impressive elite status and there are cheaper ways to get it than paying to stay three nights at Marriott properties.
