Hyatt’s small but sneaky devaluation is now live

Back in February, when Hyatt dropped the news that it was restructuring its award charts and telling us when the annual (and mostly negative) hotel category changes were going to hit, it attempted to temper all the bad news with the promise that a few good things were also on the way.

I said at the time that one of the items packaged up to look like good news was actually going to be a sneaky devaluation for a lot of members and that sneaky devaluation is now live.

What Hyatt said

From Hyatt’s February 2026 press release, this is the section on which to focus:

“As World of Hyatt continues to listen closely to members, the program plans to introduce new enhancements designed to make it even more engaging. Later this year, members will be able to share points digitally, making it easier than ever to help a loved one begin their next adventure or turn a special occasion into a shared experience.”

“Additionally, Explorists, Globalists, Lifetime Globalists and World of Hyatt Credit Cardmembers will enjoy early access to award night availability and more opportunity to plan ahead and turn points into memorable future getaways.”

The second paragraph is the key bit as it’s where Hyatt suggested that at some point in 2026, Explorists, Globalists, and co-branded card holders would be given early access to award availability.

Why this was odd

This promise seemed odd from the very start because, as I showed in a longer rant about Hyatt and as I showed when discussing a World of Hyatt award calendar glitch, everyone has long been able to book award nights at most Hyatt properties at around the 13-month mark and I couldn’t believe that Hyatt would extend that to 14 months for select World of Hyatt elites and co-branded card holders. Especially as you can’t even book awards 12 months out with some of the other hotel programs.

Hyatt continued to be sneaky

Back in June, the World of Hyatt terms and conditions were amended to include this paragraph:

“For Free Night Award or Points + Cash Award reservations made on or after June 30, 2026, Explorists, Globalists, Lifetime Globalists, and primary cardholders of a Hyatt-branded Credit Card (regardless of tier status) will have advance access to booking as compared to other Members. Eligibility for this benefit is based on tier status at the time of award booking and booking windows are based on the time zone of the applicable hotel or resort.”

At this point, Hyatt had the opportunity to come clean and admit that what it was actually going to do was to remove access to awards at the 13 month mark for anyone who didn’t have a co-branded card or hold Explorist or Globalist elite status rather than giving these people even earlier access to award inventory. But it didn’t.

Hyatt chose to keep people in the dark for a little longer.

The devaluation is now here

Now that we’re into July, the devaluation has hit and if you don’t have a World of Hyatt credit card of some kind or if you don’t hold Explorist or Globalist elite status and you attempt to search for awards further out than 12 months, this is what you see:

You can see that awards are available, but as the message above the search result says, you can’t book them unless you meet the criteria Hyatt set out back in February.

As I suspected (and said) all those months ago, Hyatt’s February press release was telling us about a devaluation in words that suggested it was an enhancement that was on the way.

Underhand, deceptive, Bonvoy-like, and sleazy are all words that would seem to be appropriate to use when describing how Hyatt has behaved, and if you had asked me a couple of years ago, I don’t think I could have imagined using words such as those to describe Hyatt back then. Nowadays, they seem apt.

Bottom line

The deceptive Hyatt devaluation that we thought was coming is now live on the Hyatt website, so anyone who doesn’t hold a World of Hyatt credit card or isn’t an Explorist or Globalist elite member can no longer make award bookings past the 12 month mark.

No doubt some will see this as a win for those of us for whom this benefit is still available. I just see it as another example of Hyatt slowly changing its relationship with guests, and becoming more and more like Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Radisson.

For the record, that’s not a compliment.

  1. No big deal. Anyone serious abut Hyatt is at least Explorist. Also, is it really a problem to get a $95 credit card that pays for itself with a free night certificate?

Really – you are just looking for things to ding Hyatt about at this point.

    • I find it genuinely baffling when people jump in to defend big corporations when they act shadily. Still, it’s very American and goes a long way to explaining how our corporations get away with as much as they do.

You carry on thinking that it’s not a big deal. I’ll carry on thinking that when Hyatt tries to sell a devaluation as an enhancement, it’s being more than a little disingenuous and should be called out.
