Review: InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa – Arrival & The Resort

InterContinental Bora Bora Resort And Thalasso Spa
There is simply too much to say about the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa to fit into one blog post so I'm going to split this review up into more manageable sizes. In this section of the review I'm going to focus on the transfer from the airport to the resort, the check-in process and our first look around the resort grounds and its amenities. Other blog posts will cover the accommodation, the dining and how we paid for the stay in the first place.

Review: Air Tahiti (Tahiti – Bora Bora)

Air Tahiti Review
Air Tahiti and Air Tahiti Nui are two completely separate airlines. The fact that they have such similar names doesn't help to distinguish them but the similarities end right there, at the names. While Air Tahiti Nui is an international airline and the one we used to fly from Los Angeles to Tahiti, Air Tahiti is an inter-island operation within French Polynesia.

Cathay Pacific The Pier Business Class Lounge – Sneak Peek

Cathay Pacific has been refurbishing a number of its lounges over the past year and yesterday it offered up a preview of its Pier Business Class lounge at Hong Kong airport to a select group of guests (clearly my invitation was lost in the mail!).

Good News! Delta Upgrade Priority To Change

Delta Upgrade Changes
Delta is not an airline I write about a lot because it doesn't come up in my travels very much and, to be frank, I really don't know enough about it to make too many useful or insightful comments. But I do know just how badly the airline has been squeezing its frequent flyers over the years (my commiserations if you're one of them) and I do know that the way Delta has peen prioritising upgrades for those flying with companions has been a big issue for Delta flyers. But things are about to change.

W Hotels Unveils A Pointless “Innovation”

a record player with a record player and a record player
I don't like W Hotels and I tend not to hide that feeling very well. I find them to be all style (and not style that I like) and little to no substance whatsoever. Most of the W 's I've visited are trying too hard to be cool and remind me more of overpriced Vegas nightclubs than upscale hotels. I really don't get why some people seem to like them so much. It's all a bit Emperor's New Clothes.

British Airways New A350 Business Class Seat Not Good Enough For Rest Of Fleet

a plane in the sky and a seat
In a conversation with Business Traveller, British Airways' new CEO, Alex Cruz, has confirmed that the new Business Class seat the airline has selected for its soon-to-be-delivered Airbus A350 aircraft isn't worth retrofitting to its existing fleet because.....and I love this......"it doesn't appear to be sufficiently revolutionary"

Singapore Airlines Premium Economy Awards & Upgrades

a grey and white recliner chair with a red and black arm rest
Singapore Airlines is one of the latest airlines to add a Premium Economy cabin to its aircraft and, while the addition of the new cabins has been anything but smooth, the airline is on track to have the all of the refits completed by the end of 2016. Now that Singapore Airlines is actually flying aircraft with their new Premium Economy product (e.g. A350 service between Singapore and Amsterdam) the airline has decided to upgrade its award chards to reflect the new product.

British Airways Launches New Route To Santiago

British Airways has announced that it will be launching service between London Heathrow and Santiago, Chile, from January 2017. The flight will become British Airways' longest flight at over 7,200 miles and is scheduled at 14 hours and 40 minutes.

Singapore Airlines Increases Award Costs To/From Europe

Singapore Airlines appears to have performed a bit of sleight of hand over the past few days and used an old magicians trick of focusing everyone's attention where it wants it to be while subtly doing something else over where no one is really looking.

I had absolutely no idea what to expect from our Air Tahiti Nui Business Class experience and, for someone who reads and writes quite a few reviews, that's quite an unusual situation to be in. But it was actually quite a nice feeling.

Review: Korean Air Lounge LAX (Tom Bradley Terminal)

Korean Air Lounge LAX
Joanna and I flew with Air Tahiti Nui from Los Angeles to Tahiti as part of our Bora Bora trip and, although our Business Class tickets with the airline entitled us to entry to the Los Angeles International Lounge (in the Tom Bradley Terminal), we chose to use my Priority Pass membership (courtesy of my Citi Prestige credit card) to visit the Korean Air Lounge instead.

Should An OTA Be Allowed To Demand This Information?

a group of colorful balls
I like to think that I've made my fair share of internet hotel bookings. Whether it's been directly through a hotel chain's website, via an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia and Orbitz or via the more opaque sites like Priceline, I've booked a fair few rooms over the years.....so I thought there wasn't much that could surprise me during the booking process. Well, it turns out that I was wrong, as Agoda decided to prove to me just the other day.

A British Airways “Enhancement” I Managed To Miss?

a close-up of a sign
A few weeks back I was flying out of London Heathrow's Terminal 5, in Economy Class, and I encountered an 'enhancement" from British Airways that I hadn't come across before. Not only was this enhancement new to me but it also appears to contravene published OneWorld tier status benefits.

Review: British Airways Euro Traveller A319 (MXP-LHR)

British Airways Euro Traveller A319
For my last flight on my 8 Flights, 7 Lounges & 3 Hotels In 5 Days trip I flew from Milan's Malpensa airport to London on a British Airways Airbus A319 aircraft in their Euro Traveller (Economy Class) cabin. I was still reasonably tired after my overnight flight from JFK to Milan on an American Airlines 767 (although I would have considerably more tired had I not been in Business Class!) and I hadn't found the Sala Montale Lounge at Milan Malpensa particularly comfortable. I was looking forward to my own bed!

Singapore Airlines To Introduce New Premium Cabins – Some With Fewer Seats

Singapore Airlines A380
Singapore airlines has long been associated with some of the best premium cabins in the sky. They seem to be able to offer the service that you often see on the Middle Eastern carriers without the ostentatious decor, over-the-top furnishings or questionable workplace practices. And now those premium cabins are about to get a new look.

Sala Montale Lounge Milan Malpensa MXP
I visited the Sala Montale Lounge at Milan's Malpensa Airport after my American Airlines 767 flight from New York JFK. The lounge is operated by a third-party on behalf of a number of OneWorld airlines that use the lounge for their premium cabin passengers and their elite status holders.

Review: Marriott AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen

Whenever I have an overnight layover, unless I'm arriving into a city in the morning or early afternoon, I will always look to book a hotel that's close to the airport. If I know I'm not going to have time to explore a city I always look for the path of least resistance and, as on this trip I would have a 7:00am flight to catch the next day, I definitely wanted to book something within easy reach of the check-in desks.

Hilton Opens New Doubletree London Excel

Doubletree London Excel
With 21 properties in London Hilton fans weren't exactly short on choice when it comes to saying in England's capital but, just in case that wasn't enough, Hilton has just opened a 22nd. The Doubletree by Hilton London ExCel is taking reservations from 23 January onwards and is the latest addition to Hilton's London portfolio. The property was once the "Ramada Hotel & Suites London Docklands" but has undergone a thorough refurbishment before being rebranded as a Doubletree.

Etihad Business Class 777-300
After a relaxing time in the Etihad Premium Lounge it was time to try out my second Etihad Business Class product of the trip - this time on their Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. I arrived at the gate after boarding had already commenced but there was no line for priority boarding so I was soon on the jet bridge looking at the aircraft that I was about to board.

To say that I procrastinated about which hotel to book in Abu Dhabi would a be an understatement of gargantuan proportions. Etihad To Abu Dhabi – Introduction

Etihad to Abu Dhabi using AAdvantage Miles
For the past few years, two of the big "sweet spots" in the AAdvantage program have been the cost of Business and First Class award tickets, on Etihad, for travel between Europe and the Middle East. At a cost of 30,000 miles and 40,000 miles respectively (one-way) they've been an absolute bargain - especially when you consider that it costs 30,000 miles to get from Europe to the US in Cargo Economy Class.

Review: Hampton By Hilton Liverpool (UK)

a building with glass doors
I've never stayed at a Hampton property before and, to be completely honest, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Last week I found myself needing a hotel in Liverpool and, as I wasn't going to be in the hotel or the city for very long, I wasn't about to splash out on an upscale property. All I needed was a comfortable room at a reasonable price and in a central location so, from the reviews on TripAdvisor, the Hampton by Hilton seemed to check the right boxes.

American Airlines Introduces Premium Economy Cabin For Long Haul Fleet

American Airlines Premium Economy
A little under two weeks ago I posted a blog that suggested American Airlines was considering introducing Premium Economy cabins to its fleet. American Airlines AAdvantage Devaluation: How The Earning Rate Changes Will Affect Me

AAdvantage Devaluation
One of the better ways to see just what effect the devaluations to a program will have is to compare what you earned under the existing policies and earning structure to what you would have earned if the new, devalued, policies and earning rates had been in place instead. American Airlines AAdvantage Award Chart Devaluations – Euro Travelers’ Viewpoint

AAdvantage Devaluation
Sometimes I can't catch a break - I take two days out to do something other than watching what the various loyalty programs, airlines and hotel chains are doing and then Marriott goes and buys Starwood and American Airlines announces an enormous award chart devaluation. That last one was the worst because the announcement came while I was at 34,000ft somewhere over Europe (and without WiFi access) and I only saw the news when I landed back at Heathrow (very late at night). Airlines really don't consider miles & points bloggers when they release their news! :)

Review: American Airlines First Class 737-800 (MIA-LGA)

American Airlines First Class 737 Review
Boarding started around 15 minutes late, but the doors were closed by 2:11 (just 4 minutes after our scheduled departure time) and we pushed back at 2:15 - not too bad. There were no major issues during the boarding process. The gate agents were good at making sure that passengers boarded only when it was their turn but they were as lax as usual when it came to ensuring that passengers weren't bringing on ridiculous sized "hand baggage". I saw some truly colossal cases brought onboard.

VIDEO: Finnair Airbus A350 XWB Landing At Heathrow

Finnaie A350XWB
Back on 15 October I took a quick day-trip to Helsinki to try out the latest Finnair aircraft - an Airbus A350XWB - which was still flying "crew orientation" flights around Europe. The Finnair Airbus A350XWB is fitted with two exterior cameras - one on the underside of the aircraft and one on/around the tail - and the cool thing is that you can watch the feeds from these cameras on the personal TV screen at your seat. This is a video of what I could see on my TV screen as we came in to land at London Heathrow Airport - I haven't edited the sound or picture in any way so the noise and the shake are very real! :)

Review: American Airlines 737 Economy Class (MIA-AUA)

American Airlines Economy Class 737 Review
Boarding started very promptly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Luckily, due to the overcrowding in the Amex Centurion lounge, we had headed to the gate earlier than we normally would have and we got to the gate just in time for Priority Boarding. Kudos to the American Airlines Gate agents who were not shy in turning back people with "Group 3" printed in a big, bold, font on the boarding passes while First Class and Executive Platinums boarded.

Review: Amex Centurion Lounge (Miami)

a sign on a wall
The Amex Centurion lounge in Miami opened in June of this year and was a welcome addition to an airport where the lounges are really not up to much. The lounge is situated in concourse D of Miami Airport, near gate D12, which this makes it very convenient for American Airlines travelers whose gates surround the area the lounge sits in.

American Airlines 777-200 Review
If you've read the introduction to this trip report you'll know that we booked our flights to Aruba with cash and in the Economy Class cabin in the hopes that my Systemwide Upgrades would see us flying in Business Class. Having booked the flights in January (a full 9 months before departure) I felt reasonably confident that the upgrades would come through. They didn't.

Review: Finnair Business Class A350 XWB (HEL-LHR) – Part 2

Yes, there were teething problems. The entertainment system needed re-booting The WiFi didn't really work There were a few loose bits of plastic around the seats But flights like this are about ironing out those teething problems so that's not a complaint from me.
In Part 1 of this review I took a look a the pre-boarding/boarding experience with Finnair and the cabins & seats on the Airbus A350XWB. In this part of the review I'll take look at the rest of the offering onboard from the entertainment and WiFi to the food and service offered.

Review: Finnair Business Class A350 XWB (HEL-LHR) – Part 1

a white airplane on a runway
This was the big event and the whole point of my lightning trip to Helsinki. The Finnair A350XWB wasn't anywhere to be seen when I landed at Helsinki Airport and there was good reason for that....it was en route from Munich on another of its "crew familiarisation" trips.

Review: Finnair Economy Class A320 (LHR-HEL)

a sign on a wall
I’m starting to find myself flying on Finnair a lot more nowadays. They’re a member of the OneWorld Alliance which means that I can credit my flights on Finnair to my American Airlines AAdvantage account. That, in turn, means that I earn AAdvantage miles as well as miles towards American Airlines status which I value quite highly.

Finnair Airbus A350 XWB Trip – Introduction

a close up of a plane
Around the middle of September I decided to do something that I've never done before and attempt to be one of the first (few thousand!) to fly on a new plane. Contrary to what Joanna would probably tell you, I'm not an "Av Geek" (plane geek) at all - I like what aircraft do and I think they're amazing pieces of engineering but I don't actively follow the industry with a passion like I know some do...and I certainly don't normally spend cash and/or points on a trip just because I want to see a new plane in action.
