Quick tip: Don’t convert Amex points to Avios right now

If you're in need of Avios (British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus) and are thinking of converting some Amex Membership Rewards points to satisfy that need, it may pay to hold off right now if your circumstances allow.

If you’re in need of Avios (British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus) and are thinking of converting some Amex Membership Rewards points to satisfy that need, it may pay to hold off right now if your circumstances allow.

Why? Because there may well be a transfer/conversion bonus about to launch.

For the past few years, Amex has offered us one opportunity per year to exchange Membership Rewards points into Avios with a bonus thrown in, and it looks like we’re due to see one launched.

Here’s when the last such bonuses appeared and what they were:

  • April 2022 – 40% bonus
  • July 2023 – 30% bonus
  • August 2024 – 30% bonus
  • June 2025 – 30% bonus

For the last three years, we have seen a 30% bonus offered on Membership Rewards to Avios conversions, and on each occasion the bonus was offered in one of the three summer months.

This year, we haven’t yet had a transfer/conversion bonus, so there’s a reasonably good chance that one is on the way. 1 August seems like a likely date for such a bonus to be launched, but as 1 August 2026 falls on a Saturday, 31 July and 3 August look a little more likely.

Clearly, this is pure speculation on my part (based on what has happened in the past), so we may not see a bonus offered at all. But with the beginning of the next month just a few days away and with Amex often launching transfer bonuses on the first day of the month, anyone who can hold off making a transfer without missing out on a great redemption could find that waiting a few days more will pay off.
