Emirates has announced what it’s calling a “world first” for Economy Class, a new adjustable headrest that’s already being fitted across parts of the fleet. It’s called the U-Dream, and while the press release does its best to make this sound like a technological leap, what Emirates has actually done is build a neck pillow into the seat.
The details
The U-Dream is a “multi-way adjustable headrest” that’s part of the “Z400 seat by Safran Seats”. It’s leather, it’s padded, and it has “flexible side wings that can be folded inwards” to cradle your head and neck so it doesn’t fall “forwards or sideways” while you’re asleep.
It also “moves vertically and tilts”, so it can be set to work for passengers of different heights and body types. Emirates says it has been “independently tested and verified” to meet EASA safety standards.
Apparently, three Emirates A350s already have this fitted, and the airline says that all of its A350s will have the U-Dream headrest installed “by the end of the year”. It will also come pre-installed on all 270 Boeing 777Xs the airline has on order (if they ever arrive).
From 2027, installation begins on the “retrofitted Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s”, so the eventual coverage is all A350s and most of the A380 and 777 fleet.
Sir Tim Clark, the President of Emirates, says that the U-Dream “changes the game if the person wants to sleep, by supporting the neck in full”, and that “no more neck pillows” are needed.
Thoughts
Emirates is effectively giving Economy Class passengers a neck pillow permanently attached to their seat. Wings that fold in around your head to stop it lolling sideways is precisely the job a travel pillow does, just without you having to carry it or strap it to the outside of your bag.
And I can see how that may be genuinely useful – it’s one less thing to have to carry around with you – and if we can trust the airline to clean it after every flight (I wouldn’t trust most airlines, but maybe Emirates), that’s a good thing.
But we need to keep some of the language Emirates is choosing to use in proportion.
The airline calls this a “game-changing new seat addition” and says it gives Economy Class customers support “typically associated with premium cabins”.
Game changing? Really? This is a nice ergonomic improvement to a headrest, not a reinvention of Economy Class.
Plenty of airlines already offer headrests with wings that fold in, so what Emirates is really offering here is a better version of an existing idea, with more adjustment and better padding. Yes, that’s good, but given that people have long been able to bring their own neck pillow onboard, what game is this changing?
As readers of this site will know, I’m not a big fan of flying long-haul in Economy Class (although it does happen), but I am intrigued to know how good this actually is.
What’s are the vertical movement and the tilt like? Most adjustable headrests have a limited range and if you’re tall, or short, you often end up with the wings doing nothing at all. If Emirates has genuinely solved that, well done to them (but it’s still not game changing).
The rollout is the other thing worth looking out for, because it’s not going to be that quick.
All A350s by the end of the year is quick, but the A380s and 777s (which is where most Emirates Economy Class passengers actually sit) don’t start to be retrofitted until 2027 and the retrofit only happens as part of the overall aircraft retrofit programme, so it will be some time before you can book an Economy Class Emirates flight and be relatively sure that your flight will offer the U-Dream (I really don’t like that name).
Bottom line
Emirates is fitting a new adjustable headrest, the U-Dream, across its Economy Class cabins. It’s leather, padded, tilts, moves vertically, and has fold-in side wings that support your head while you sleep.
It’s already flying on three A350s and all of the Emirates A350s should have this by the end of 2026. All 270 Boeing 777Xs will get it from new (probably in 2040), and the airline’s A380s and 777s will get this from 2027 as part of the retrofit programme.
