Quick thoughts
There are four key things to note here:
- Based on the wording in the terms and conditions, it looks like the $500 spending target does not need to be met in one transaction. Multiple transactions that add up to $500 or more will end up triggering the statement credit (although I suspect that most people triggering this offer will do it in one stay).
- There’s no guarantee that all resort properties in the eligible regions are participating, so care will be required when booking for anyone wanting to trigger this offer.
- This promotion is targeted, but as I could choose to add it to any of my Membership Rewards cards (including Business cards), it doesn’t look like the targeting is particularly narrow.
- Don’t forget that you only have to spend $500 to trigger this offer so if you also hold a Hyatt branded credit card and you’re spending more than $500, you should be able to ask the front desk to charge $500 to your targeted Amex card and the rest to your World of Hyatt card so that you maximise your Hyatt points earnings.
Overall, the best Amex card to use with this offer will probably be the American Express® Green Card which returns 3 points/dollar on travel spending (terms apply), but as that’s a card that I do not hold, I’m going to have to make do with adding it to my Platinum Card® from American Express which will earn me just 1 point/dollar (terms apply).
Ordinarily and in the absence a card that will earn me a category spending bonus, I would use the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express for an offer like this (it earns me 2 points/dollar on the first $50,000 of spending every year and 1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), but as this card charges foreign transaction fees and as I think I’m most likely to use this offer outside of the US, I’m going to have to settle for using the Platinum Card unless my plans change and I suddenly decide to book a domestic property.
Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The American Express® Green Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.
Bottom line
American Express is currently targeting select cardholders for a $100 saving when they spend $500 or more (in one or more transactions) at select Hyatt properties in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean and Colombia.
Based on how many of my Amex cards are showing this offer this doesn’t appear to be a narrowly targeted deal, so if you have an upcoming stay at a participating Hyatt (or if you’re planning a stay in a location that has one or more participating Hyatt properties), make sure you check your Amex offers to see if you could save on your stay.
