Starting this week elite members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue and United’s MileagePlus programs are eligible for a suite of priority services and cabin upgrades when traveling on either carrier's network.
JetBlue and United Airlines have officially activated reciprocal frequent flyer benefits marking the next phase of their “Blue Sky” partnership.
Starting this week elite members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue and United’s MileagePlus programs are eligible for a suite of priority services and seating upgrades when traveling on either carrier’s network.
This development follows the initial rollout of their interline agreement (last year) which focused on ticket sales across both airline platforms and on the ability to earn and redeem points across both airlines.
The partnership introduces a tiered approach to airport services, specifically targeting seat comfort and boarding priority. The most notable inclusion is the access to extra-legroom seating, though, as you’ll see, the timing of this benefit is restricted.
Cabin and seating benefits
- Extra Legroom: All members receive complimentary access to extra-legroom seats (Even More Space on JetBlue and Economy Plus on United) at the time of check-in.
- Preferred Seating: All members can select “preferred” seats (standard seats in more desirable locations) at any point after booking.
Baggage
- Checked Baggage: All elite members receive one free checked bag along with priority bag handling across both airlines.
Boarding and airport priority
The airlines have aligned their boarding groups to ensure status recognition across both fleets:
- On JetBlue:
- MileagePlus Premier Platinum and 1K members board with Group 1
- MileagePlus Premier Gold members board with Group 2
- MileagePlus Premier Silver with Group 3.
- On United:
- JetBlue Mosaic 2, 3, and 4 members board with Group 1
- JetBlue Mosaic 1 members board with Group 2.
Ground services
Reciprocal priority check-in and priority security access are now active at participating airports for all elite members.
Logistics and standby
In addition to the soft perks, the Blue Sky agreement includes reciprocal same-day standby options.
This allows elite members to list for earlier or later flights on either airline on the day of travel, providing a level of flexibility that was previously reserved for each airline’s own high-tier frequent flyers.
We’re told …
The Blue Sky agreement is designed to bridge the gap between JetBlue’s leisure-heavy domestic network and United’s global infrastructure.
According to this latest announcement, the next step in the partnership will be the introduction of single-ticket interline itineraries which will allow passengers to book complex trips involving both carriers under a single reservation, streamlining baggage transfers and missed-connection protection.
Final thoughts
This update moves the JetBlue-United relationship from a simple sales agreement to a functional frequent flyer alliance.
While the “at check-in” restriction for extra-legroom seats means that this benefit is subject to availability and may not be an option for a lot of travelers (which will be annoying), the addition of priority boarding, priority baggage handling, and a checked baggage allowance all provide tangible value for elite members in both programs.
As the carriers move toward single-ticket connectivity later this year, the real test will be the technical integration of their respective IT systems.
Whether the “seamless” experience promised in the press release holds up under the weight of travel remains to be seen, but for now, the expansion of benefits is a positive development for members of both MileagePlus and TrueBlue.
