Hyatt has been on an expansion kick in the past few years but not all things have been going to plan (Covid certainly hasn’t helped). Properties like the Park Hyatt Los Angeles and the Andaz Palm Springs were due to be open by now (they’re not) and a number of other properties that were also first mentioned in January 2019 are yet to open their doors…but it hasn’t all been delays and bad news.

Hyatt has announced that 2020 has seen it open 7 new US properties across its Thompson and Hyatt Centric brands and it has also now confirmed that it expects to see a further 13 new properties (from the Alila, Hyatt Centric, and Thompson brands) open up across the United States in 2021.

From what Hyatt has made public, it would appear as if most (possibly all) of these properties have been mentioned in the past, so these 13 properties are not being added to the Hyatt portfolio as well as the properties we’ve head announced before, but it’s good to finally get some visibility on when we can expect to see some of the properties that have been in the pipeline for at least a couple of years, finally accepting guests.

2020 Openings

2020 saw Hyatt open seven new lifestyle brand properties in 2020 with the last of the seven opening its doors just last month.

  • Thompson Washington D.C. – opened January 2020
  • Hyatt Centric Old Town Alexandria (Va.) – opened January 2020
  • Hyatt Centric Downtown Portland (Ore.) – opened February 2020
  • Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale – opened April 2020
  • Hyatt Centric Downtown Minneapolis – opened June 2020
  • Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia – opened October 2020
  • Thompson Dallas – opened November 2020

This Is What’s Coming In 2021

It’s important to stress that based on how Hyatt has phrased its press release, the properties you’re about to see listed are almost certainly not going to be the only Hyatt properties opening in the US next year – these are just the “lifestyle brand” properties that we can expect to see. These are the 13:

  • Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas (Calif.)
  • Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver
  • Hyatt Centric Beale Street Memphis (Tenn.)
  • Hyatt Centric 39th & 5th New York
  • Hyatt Centric SouthPark Charlotte (N.C.)
  • Hyatt Centric Downtown Sacramento (Calif.)
  • Hyatt Centric San Salvador (El Salvador)
  • Thompson Austin (Texas)
  • Thompson Buckhead (Ga.)
  • Thompson Denver
  • Thompson Hollywood (Calif.)
  • Thompson San Antonio
  • Thompson Savannah (Ga.)

A property that noticeable by its absence from that list is the Andaz Palm Springs which was originally slated to open in “fall 2019” but which now is just labeled as “coming soon”. I’m not sure what’s going on with this property because even if the pandemic wreaked havoc with an already delayed opening, I would still expect to see it open at some point in 2021. Apparently not.

Bottom Line

World of Hyatt enthusiasts got 7 new lifestyle brand properties in 2020 (not that most of us have had much of an opportunity to try them out!) and can expect to see a further 13 Hyatt lifestyle brand properties opening their doors in the US in 2021.

Personally, I’m most looking forward to seeing what the Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas is like as it would make for a good weeke3nd break option for me. Which, if any, of these properties look most interesting to you?
