Hilton Honors has announced that from next week it will be extending a “one-time opportunity” to its Diamond and Lifetime Diamond Elite status holders which will allow them to gift status for one year to a family member or friend.

Ordinarily (when hotels aren’t mostly empty), the Hilton Honors program only allows its Diamond elite members to gift Gold status after they earn 60 elite night credits, and to gift Diamond status only after they earn 100 elite night credits in a year. For a very limited time, Hilton is removing those elite night requirements.

All Hilton Diamond Elites (including those who have Diamond Elite status courtesy of the Hilton Aspire Credit Card from American Express) should receive an email next week, which will give them the opportunity to gift status to another Hilton Honors member. Diamond Elites will be able to gift Gold status while Lifetime Diamond Elites will be able to gift Diamond status.

Note: All information about the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Eligible members will have until 31 January 2021 to gift status, which will then last for one year (365 days). If the person to whom a Diamond member is gifting status doesn’t have any immediate plans to visit a Hilton property, it would make good tactical sense to delay the gifting of status for as long as possible to make sure the status recipient has as much time as possible to use their gift.

Any Diamond Elite members who go on to earn 60 or 100 elite night credits will still be able to gift Gold/Diamond status as they have been able to in the past – this move by Hilton is in addition to the regular gifting rules.

As a quick reminder, this is what the various Hilton Honors Status Tiers offer:

Bottom Line

If you currently hold Hilton Honors Diamond status be on the lookout for an email from Hilton next week as you will be invited to gift Gold or Diamond status to another Hilton Honors member of your choice. Don’t forget that gifted status is only valid for one year, so don’t rush to gift status if the recipient doesn’t have any immediate plans to visit a Hilton property.
