The New Senator Lounge In Vienna

The new Senator lounge in Vienna is part of a larger refurbishment project that has already seen two Business Class lounges upgraded and which will also see the second of the airport’s two Senator lounges get a facelift by the end of spring 2018.

Considering the lounge is now open for guests Austrian hasn’t exactly been very forthcoming with details of the new lounge (although we do have images) but I’ll pass on what we know so far.

All the lounges have been redesigned with “themes of Austria and individuality” in mind. The airline says that this manifests itself in the inclusion of real Austrian beech trees which have been “preserved using a special technique”.

The furniture you’ll find throughout the lounge is customised specially for the lounge and is Austrian in origin.

Lastly, the lounge features “selected cutouts from pictures created by Austrian artists such as Gustav Klimt“.

Thoughts

I can’t remember the last time I visited a Senator lounge (I don’t fly with Star Alliance all that often) but, based on the images provided by Austrian Airlines, I think I’d be disappointed with the furnishings if I was flying in First Class – there’s more than a hint of IKEA about the furniture.

If you compare this lounge to the recently opened Lufthansa lounge in Milan (which isn’t just for First Class and Star Alliance Gold flyers) it comes out looking a bit utilitarian and basic – there’s more warmth and comfort about the lounge in Milan. If this is the “new style” we can expect from all future Senator lounges I can’t say that it’s tempting me to fly Star Alliance airlines more.

Considering the excellent catering you’ll find on Austrian airlines I’ve no doubt the airline will ensure that Do&Co provide a good set of food and drink options for guests visiting the lounge but I’m not sure that will be enough to impress Austrian’s (and Star Alliance’s) top-tier flyers.
