IHG’s Kimpton brand has a staunchly loyal following (one that dates back well before the brand was purchased by IHG) but it has long been a brand with a very US-centric portfolio. In recent years, however, Kimpton has been expanding outside of the United States and the latest property to be announced is a second new Kimpton for Spain.

Earlier this year, IHG opened the Kimpton Vividora Hotel in Barcelona and now we’ve been given the news that 2022 will see a new Kimpton property open on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

The Kimpton Mallorca will open on the site of the existing Santa Ponsa Country Club which sits on the south-west corner of the island a little under 30 minutes drive from Mallorca’s Palma airport.

The new Kimpton will operate under a management agreement with Calvia Country Club S.A. and the site upon which it currently sits is to be completely refurbished and will see an extension added as the property is brought up to Kimpton standards.

We haven’t been given a lot of information about the new Kimpton but IHG has confirmed that the property will have just 79 rooms and will offer two outdoor pools (one with direct access to the beach), a further indoor pool, tennis courts, a yoga studio and a spa with 16 treatment rooms.

Karin Sheppard, SVP, Managing Director, Europe at IHG is quoted as saying the following:

“We all know that 2020 has been a year of missed holidays and, as soon as people are able to travel again, they will be looking for experiences steeped in meaningful human connection and in destinations rich in culture and natural beauty; both of which will be abundant at Kimpton Mallorca. With this signing we are expanding our offering to the luxury traveller and adding to our strong pipeline of luxury hotels and resorts in Europe over the next few years.”

“I’m particularly delighted to see the expansion of our luxury portfolio in Southern Europe, home to so many popular leisure destinations. We already have a strong presence in both the mainstream and upscale segments and are now delighted to be expanding our presence in the luxury space, too. This signing once again shows the strength of our brands and the confidence that owners and investors have in IHG.”

Quick Thoughts

With the loss of the Park Hyatt, those of us wanting to make the most of our hotel loyalty points to stay at an upscale property on Mallorca took a little bit of a hit earlier this year so the news that Mallorca is to get a Kimpton is certainly welcome.

It’s still early days (I’m told that the renovations haven’t even started yet) so there’s no way of knowing what the room prices will be like or what award costs will look like but, if the new Kimpton Vividora Hotel in Barcelona is anything to go by (I’m currently seeing rooms available for 35,000 in peak season), there could be some good value awards to be had at the Kimpton Mallorca as long as the cash rates don’t get out of control.

Bottom Line

IHG says that it will be opening a new Kimpton property on Mallorca in 2022. The new boutique hotel will sit on the site of the Santa Ponsa Country Club and, once renovations and the extension are complete, will offer 79 rooms as well as all the usual amenities we’ve come to expect from a Kimpton resort property.
