Quick thoughts
A quick browse through the deals that American Airlines is highlighting showed that the best deals aren’t always the shortest flights. Los Angeles – San Francisco for example, requires more miles more than Los Angeles – Washington D.C. on dates that we’ve seen, so you’ll have to browse the deals if you’re not set on a specific route.
Examples of some of the better deals that we have seen for travel within North America and the Caribbean include these:
- Boston (BOS) – Columbus (CMH) from 9,000 miles + £6
- Boston (BOS) – San Diego (SAN) from 9,500 miles + £12
- Dallas (DFW) – Cancun (CUN) from 9,000 miles + $63
- Dallas (DFW) – Cabo San Lucas (SJD) from 9,000 miles + $68
- Houston (IAH) – Toronto (YYZ) from 9,000 miles + $6
- Houston (IAH) – Aruba (AUA) from 11,000 miles + $22
- Los Angeles (LAX) – Washington D.C. (DCA) from 9,000 miles + $12
- Los Angeles (LAX) – Raleigh (RDU) from 9,000 miles + $12
- Miami (MIA) – New York (NYC) from 9,500 miles + $6
- Miami (MIA) – Chicago (ORD) from 9,500 miles + $6
- New York (JFK) – Miami (MIA from 9,500 miles + $12
- New York (LGA) – Raleigh (RDU) from 9,000 miles + $6
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Cancun (CUN) from 9,000 miles + $63
- Phoenix (PHX) – San Francisco from 9,000 miles + $6
There are many, many other routes on which deals like this appear to be available, so don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is it. It really isn’t
As far a travel to Europe goes, it’s hard to tell how good or bad the deals are as no matter what routes I searched, I couldn’t find any award flights costing less than 30,000 miles + taxes (American says that its Europe deals start from 21,000 miles + taxes).
You may have better luck than me, but keep in mind that Iberia is currently running its own transatlantic award sale in which it’s offering flights from New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. to Madrid from just 9,600 Avios + taxes & surcharges (one-way), and while the Iberia taxes and fees are likely to be higher than those charged by AA, this is still going to be the better deal if these routes suit you (you may be able to use an AA deal to position to NYC, Boston, or Washington and then connect on to one of the Iberia deals).
Overall, it’s good to see American Airlines running a mileage sale even if I can’t find some of the deals that it claims are on offer (this may be user error on my part).
Some of the domestic/regional deals look to offer fairly good value (coast to coast for under 10,000 miles either way looks nice) and some of the deals to the Caribbean look tempting too, but as pricing can vary significantly from date to date, you may have to be flexible with your travel plans if you want to lock in the very best pricing this sale is offering.
Bottom line
If you need to travel between 1 August and 30 September 2026, keep in mind that American Airlines is currently running an award sale that covers those dates. During this time, awards for one-way travel within the U.S. 48 and awards from the U.S. 48 to Mexico, the Caribbean or Central America start from 9,000 miles + taxes, and some route pricing looks tempting.
