American Express has launched at least one new targeted spending bonus offer for holders of its business cards, and while I can only see one version of the offer in my online accounts, past experiences tell me that there will almost certainly be other versions of this offer going around.

Thoughts

The first thing to note is that as we’ve seen in the past, this offer doesn’t have to be added to a targeted card any time soon. The end date for this offer is 31 December 2025, so as a targeted cardholder will only have 90 days from the day they add the offer to their card to earn the bonus points, the best move here is for cardholders to only add the offer to their targeted card once they know they’ll be able to hit the spending target in the following 90 days.

The second thing to note is that this is a better offer than we’ve seen Amex start out with in the past (I’ll explain what I mean by “start out with” in a moment) and this is a more generous offer than the one I was initially targeted for back in September 2024 (the last time I recall seeing this type of offer launch).

At TFM, we value Membership Rewards Points at 1.5 cents each (based on the value that we know that we can get out of them with relative ease) so effectively, Amex is offering me an added incentive worth $210 to put $9,500 of spending on my Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (up to 3 times).

Put another way, Amex is effectively offering me a bonus of approximately 1.47 points for every dollar I spend when I spend $9,500.

This may be tempting for someone holds a Blue Business® Plus Credit Card and who has a lot of unbonused spending coming up.

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express earns 2 points/dollar on the first $50,000 of spending in a calendar year (1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), so with this targeted offer thrown in, a cardholder could earn up to 3.47 points/dollar when spending in a category that would otherwise earn them just 1 point/dollar with another card.

That’s not bad at all, but there’s a chance that this may get better

Variations are probably available & your offer may improve

We have seen Amex publish similar offers to this one in the past, and as the nature of those offers varied significantly, it’s reasonable to assume that the same will be the case this time around – you may have been targeted for a different offer to me.

Also, the last time we saw an offer like this targeted to our Amex Business cards, I noticed that Amex sweetened the offer (at least twice) when I resisted the temptation of adding it to any of my cards. This is what I was referring to when, earlier, I wrote that what I’ve been targeted for is better than the offer Amex started out with last time out.

Clearly, there’s no guarantee that the same scenario will play out this time around, but if you’re not particularly enamored with whatever offer you have been targeted for, keep this in mind – don’t add the offer to your targeted card just yet and wait and see if, in a few weeks’ time, Amex comes back with something better.

You have until the end of the year to add this offer to your card, so there’s no need to rush into action just yet.

Bottom line

American Express is targeting holders of select business cards for offers that would see them earn bonus points for hitting preset spending targets within 90-days of loading the offer to their targeted card.

Based on the offer that I have been targeted for, it may be that, for once, some of the offers being published will be lucrative enough to justify putting additional spending on cards that wouldn’t otherwise have seen that spending … and that’s good news.

Keep in mind that unless you have a lot of spending coming up, there’s no need to add this offer to your targeted card just yet. You have until the end of the year to load this offer so, if whatever you’ve been targeted for today isn’t particularly great, it may be worth waiting to see if Amex comes back to you with a better deal.

Have you been targeted for an offer like this? If yes, let us know which of your cards has been targeted and what your offer is in the comments.
