Spend with Orient Express and save with Amex [Targeted]

Amex has launched a targeted offer for spending at with Orient Express, but while the headline saving (up to 20%) looks good, be aware that given the cost of Orient Express bookings (train or hotel), the saving on offer is very unlikely to be material.

Quick thoughts

There are five key things to note here:

• Be aware that there are two distinct luxury travel companies operating services under the Orient Express name and while they now have a strategic partnership, if you book with the wrong Orient Express, this offer won’t trigger. Use the link in your amex offer to book to be 100% certain you’re booking with the right company.
• You don’t have to book a train journey to make the most of this offer. Based on the terms, spending at the Orient Express La Minerva hotel in Rome and the Orient Express Venezia hotel in Venice (obviously) will qualify for this deal.
• If you are considering booking the train, be aware that only the “La Dolce Vita” trip (2 nights, Venice and Tuscany) will qualify for this deal. The Rome to Istanbul service will not.
• Based on the wording in the terms and conditions, it looks like the $2,000 spending target does not need to be met in one transaction, but that’s going to be a moot point given the cost of traveling on the Orient Express or booking one of the two hotels.
• Don’t forget that you “only” have to spend $2,000 to trigger this offer so if you also hold a credit card that will give you a better return on hotel spending than the Amex card to which you can add this offer (and you’re spending more than $2,000), check to see if Orient Express will allow you charge $2,000 to your targeted Amex card and the rest to whatever other card you have that will serve you better.

Overall (and as is usual with these kind of deals), the best Amex card to use with this offer will probably be the American Express® Green Card which returns 3 points/dollar on travel spending (terms apply), but as that’s a card that I do not hold, I would have to make do with adding it to my Platinum Card® from American Express (1 point/dollar – terms apply) if I had any interest in redeeming this offer.

Bottom line

American Express is currently targeting select cardholders for a $400 saving when they spend $2,000 or more with Orient Express on stays at either of two hotels or on the La Dolce Vita train trip which takes in Venice and Tuscany.

Based on how many of my Amex cards are showing this offer this doesn’t appear to be a narrowly targeted deal, so if you feel like really splashing out on your next trip to Europe (it would probably be more of tsunami than a splash), this offer may save you what will probably be just a tiny proportion of your overall bill. But that’s still a saving!
