Thoughts
This is a nice surprise because I can’t think of the last time an Amex Amazon offer had such a low sending requirement (the last offer I remember required $150 of spending for 1,200 points). This should be an easy 3,000 points for most cardholders.
And I type “most cardholders” even though there should be a LOT of people who have this offer targeted to one of their Amex cards as we, at TFM, have it on every Membership Rewards card that we hold. Including Business cards.
The total number of points/dollar you’ll earn by using this offer will depend on the Membership Rewards card to which you load the offer, but 3,000 bonus points is the maximum any single cardholder can earn.
As far as I can see, there’s no reason to think that Amazon gift card purchases and reloads will not trigger this offer as the terms and conditions only rule out corporate gift cards and custom-designed gift cards.
That should make it pretty easy to make sure that you don’t leave any points behind.
The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express ordinarily earns 2 points/dollar on up to $50,000 of spending per year (1 point/dollar thereafter), and that makes it the best card to use with this offer (most other Amex cards will only earn 1 point/dollar for Amazon spending).
A $40 purchase from Amazon charged to my Blue Business Plus card should trigger this offer and would earn me a total of 1,080 points (80 points from the regular earning rate and 1,000 bonus points), and as I value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each (based on the value that I know I can get out of them with relative ease), I would view that as an effective return of $16.20 (up to 3 times) or 40.5%.
That’s a fantastic return and it’s a return that even someone with no immediate plans to do any shopping though Amazon.com should be able to lock in.
Just top-up your Amazon gift card balance by $40 (up to 3 times) with the card to which this offer has been loaded and the bonus points should be yours.
Bottom line
American Express is currently targeting cardholders with an offer to earn 1,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when they spend at least $40 though Amazon.com (the offer can be triggered up to three times).
Cardholders should choose which of their targeted cards they load the offer with care to as some cards will offer a better return than others.
