Yesterday, a low-key United Airlines teaser appeared to suggest that it would be announcing at least one new international route at 08:00 today to go alongside the 10 new flights and 5 new destinations that the airline announced on 14 October. Well, 08:00 ET has now passed and we now know what United’s teaser was all about.

United Airlines loves London

United Airlines has just announced that it plans to operate 22 daily flights between the United States and London in 2022 which will see the airline adding 1 new route to its network as well as 4 other new daily flights to the capital of the United Kingdom.

The United’s new route that United says it’s announcing is a route between Boston and London Heathrow but as this is actually a route that the airline already discussed towards the beginning of the year, this isn’t completely new news.

Boston – London

The new Boston – London route will launch on 26 March 2022 and will operate on the following schedule:

UA24 BOS 22:25 – 10:05+1 day LHR (Daily)
UA25 LHR 17:00 – 19:40 BOS (Daily)

This route will be operated by a United Airlines Boeing767-300ER aircraft offering 46 Polaris Business Class seats, 22 Premium Plus (Premium Economy) seats, and 99 regular Economy Class seats.

New Flights

United says that as well as launching its new Boston – London route, it will also launch 4  more new flights to London on the same day (26 March 2022). These flights are:

  • Two new daily flights between Newark to Heathrow using the same 767-300ER aircraft as it uses on its other Newark – London flights. This will see United offering seven daily flights between the two airports.
  • A new daily flight between Denver and Heathrow using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner This will double the number of flights that United offers between the two airports and will follow the airline’s resumption of its original service on 4 March 2022.
  • A new daily flight between San Francisco and London Heathrow using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner which will see United offering 3 daily flights between the two airports.

LA – London comes back

Finally, United Airlines has confirmed that it will restart its route between Los Angeles (LAX) and London Heathrow on 4 March 2022. The route is already in the booking systems and the planned schedule looks like this:

UA923 LAX 17:45 – 12:20+1 day LHR (Daily)
UA935 LHR 14:10 – 17:10 LAX (Daily)

This route will be operated by a United Airlines 787-9 Dreamliner

United’s other routes coming in 2022

Washington D.C. – Amman, Jordan *New Destination*

From 5 May 2022, United will offer a new service between Washington, D.C. and Amman, Jordan. The route will be operated 3x/week by United’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft but at the time of writing, has not been loaded into the airline’s booking systems.

Newark – Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal *New Destination*

United will add the Azores to its route network from 13 May 2022 when it launches a new service between New York/Newark and Ponta Delgada on the following schedule:

UA216 EWR 22:55 – 08:40+1 day PDL (Daily)
UA217 PDL 10:45 – 12:55 EWR (Daily)

Initially, this route will operate 3x/week but this will increase to a daily service from 3 June 2022.

The airline will operate this route using a brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft featuring United’s new interior with seatback entertainment, Bluetooth connectivity, and overhead bin space for every customer.

Newark – Bergen, Norway *New Destination*

On 20 May 2022, United will become the only U.S. carrier offering flights to Norway when it launches a new route between Newark and Bergen on the following schedule:

UA270 EWR 20:40 – 10:05+1 day BGO (Wed, Fri & Sun)
UA271 BGO 11:55 – 14:25 EWR (Mon, Thu & Sat)

UA237 PMI 12:55 – 16:10 EWR (Mon, Wed & Fri)

The airline will operate the route with a Boeing 767-300ER.

Newark – Tenerife, Spain *New Destination*

From 9 June 2022, United will use a Boeing 757-200 to operate a 3x/week service between Newark and Tenerife on the following schedule:

UA248 EWR 21:50 – 09:55+1 day TFS (Mon, Thu & Sat)
UA249 TFS 12:00 – 14:55 EWR (Tue, Fri & Sun)

This route will make United the only airline to fly direct between the Canary Islands and North America as well as the airline with the most Spanish destinations served out of North America.

As well as adding the new destinations mentioned above to its schedules, United is also adding flights to a number of European cities in anticipation of a resurgence in visitors. Next spring United will add:

New daily flights between Denver and Munich:

UA760 DEN 20:20 – 14:05+1 day MUC (Daily 787-9 service)
UA761 MUC 16:05 – 18:35 DEN (Daily 787-9 service)

New daily flights between Chicago and Milan:

New daily service between Washington, D.C. and Berlin:

UA234 IAD 17:45 – 08:20+1 day BER (Daily 767-400 service)
UA235 BER 11:05 – 14:25 IAD (Daily 767-400 service)

United has also confirmed that it will bring back a number of routes that were suspended when the pandemic put a halt to worldwide travel. Those routes and their relaunch dates are as follows:

  • San Francisco – Bangalore will restart as a daily service from 26 March 2022.
  • Newark – Nice will restart as a daily service from 29 April 2022.
  • Chicago – Zurich will restart as a daily service from 23 April 2022.
  • A second daily flight between Newark and Frankfurt will return from 23 April 2022
  • Flights from Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and New York/Newark to Tokyo Haneda are expected to return by 26 March 2022.

More restarts will probably be announced in the coming months but that’s all so far (I think!)

Bottom Line

To go alongside the 10 new flights and 5 new destinations that United announced on 14 October, the airline has today also said that it plans to operate a total of 22 flights between the United States and London in 2022. United’s plan calls for the launch of a new route between Boston and London and Heathrow, the addition of 4 further daily flights across the Atlantic from Newark, Denver, and San Francisco, and the resumption of two former London flights from Denver and Los Angeles.
