Iberia is running a strange US and Mexico Economy Class sale

Iberia is currently running a sale on flights to the United States and Mexico but this is one of the stranger sales that I’ve seen an airline release – the prices aren’t particularly impressive and the travel dates are just weird.

The offer

Bookings must be made by 31 July 2026, for travel through 25 August 2026. Tickets are available on iberia.com and via the Iberia app.

The headline fares are:

• New York from €390 each way
• Boston, Washington and Miami from €392 each way
• Monterrey from €427 each way
• Mexico City from €605 each way

Currently, Iberia serves a dozen destinations in the United States. It added Newark in March 2026 as a third daily New York flight, and both Boston and Miami now see two daily flights following the introduction of the A321XLR. To top all that off, Washington D.C. gets seven weekly flights from Madrid.

Monterrey is a new route, and Iberia says Mexico is now its second largest Latin American country by capacity after Brazil.

Thoughts

Ok, this is what I think is a little odd.

Firstly, the fares you see above are one-way fares, so New York would cost at least €780 round trip (that’s the starting point for the fare). That’s probably ok for an August fare, but it isn’t the sort of fare “deal” that usually gets a press release written about it.

Also, let’s not forget that these fares will almost certainly be the most restrictive fare classes that Iberia sells, so expect no checked baggage and just a handful of Avios and elite status points, so given that Iberia’s surcharges aren’t usually too onerous, these fares may not even be low enough to beat an Avios redemption.

Secondly (and this is the bit that I really don’t understand), what’s up with the ridiculously close-in and ridiculously short travel window? Bookings must be made by 31 July and travel has to be completed by 25 August 2026. That’s a travel window of, at most, 34 days.

The sale period isn’t odd (lots of sales only last for a few days), but what kind of sale, effectively, tells you that you have just days to book and then have to fly out almost immediately?

I could guess that this is just about August demand not being what Iberia expected it to be, but if that’s the case, the airline would have known about the weak demand weeks (possibly months) ago, so why leave it to the last minute to try to sell more seats?

Perhaps Iberia held out hoping late bookings would come in and they haven’t. Or maybe this is about something else altogether. Either way, this doesn’t look like a sale that was planned out some time ago. It looks like a knee-jerk reaction to … something.

Bottom line

Iberia has launched an Economy Class sale for travel to the US and Mexico, but you have just days to book, you’ll have to be in a position to travel before 25 August (you’ll have to finish your trip by then) and the prices aren’t particularly impressive. That makes this one of the odder airline sales I’ve seen in recent years.
