The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is the only freely available credit card that offers very valuable elite status in one of the world’s largest hotel loyalty programs and when placed in the right hands, it’s a card that can more than cover its annual fee thanks to the great benefits and rebates it offers.
In brief
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card comes with a $550 annual fee (rates & fees) and stacks statement credits, complimentary Hilton Honors Diamond status, and an annual free night reward that, on its own, can make carrying this card worthwhile.
That being said, this is a card designed for Hilton loyalists and not infrequent Hilton guests, so make sure you know which you are before you consider applying.

This is a card that can pay for itself
The best type of credit card is the one that can pay for itself and if you’re someone who likes to travel and to stay at Hilton properties across the globe, there’s no reason why the Aspire card shouldn’t cover its $550 annual fee with ease (rates & fees). Here’s how:
Hilton resort credits (terms apply)
In every year of card membership (starting from the moment the card is issued), the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card allows a cardholder to earn up to $400 in statement credit per calendar year for spending made at participating Hilton resorts.
The $400 in credits is split across two halves of the calendar year meaning that a cardholder can earn up to $200 back (at participating resorts) between January and June and a further $200 back between July and December every year.
There’s no minimum stay requirement and this benefit isn’t restricted to a limited number of Hilton brands, so as long as any resort on-property charges are settled using the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, a cardholder will have those charges rebated up to a value of $400 per calendar year.
At the time of writing, all Hilton resorts worldwide are considered to be “participating resorts” for the purposes of this benefit, but SLH properties are excluded.
Free night certificate (terms apply)
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card offers cardholders a free night at most Hilton properties in the world (link to list of exclusions).
A code to redeem the annual free night will be added to a cardmember’s account within 8-14 weeks of an account being opened and can be redeemed for one night standard accommodation, for double occupancy.
While it’s up to an individual cardholder to decide where to spend their free night, most will almost certainly choose to redeem it at one of Hilton’s more upscale properties where it can book a room costing considerably more than this card’s annual fee.
While it would be imprudent to value the free night benefit as high as $550, most cardholders should have little trouble getting at least $300 – $350 worth of value out of this benefit every year.
For cardholders in a position to put a considerable amount of spending on the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, the ability to earn a second free night certificate after $30,000 of spending and a third free night certificate after $60,000 of spending should just be icing on the cake.
Flight credit (terms apply)
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card offers cardholders up to $200 per year in statement credits for airfare spending made directly with airlines or through Amex Travel.
On the upside, these credits are available for spending made with all major commercial airlines (you don’t have to select an airline in advance) and because they cover airfare spending and not just airline incidentals, they should be relatively easy to use.
On the downside, the $200 is split across four quarters of the year so cardholders can only claw back $50 of eligible airfare spending every three months (January – March, April – June, July – September, and October – December).
Property credits (terms apply)
When a cardholder uses their Hilton Honors Aspire Card to book a 2-night (or longer) stay at a Waldorf or Conrad property through HiltonHonorsAspireCard.com they will be eligible to receive a property credit of up to $100 per booking.
The $100 credit cannot be earned on all the rates that an eligible property is offering (some of the cheaper rates are sometimes excluded), but considering that there’s no limit to the number of times this benefit can be used, a cardholder should still be able to get at least $100 of value out of it every year.
Just looking at the four benefits that I’ve discussed above and without putting a value on the welcome offer, the cell phone cover, the National elite status, the Clear Plus credit, or the Hilton Honors Diamond status that the Aspire card offers, you can see that it shouldn’t require any tactics or careful planning to get at least $650 of value out of this card every year … and that’s pretty good going for a card costing $550/year (rates & fees).
The Welcome offer is very good
At TFM, we value Hilton Honors points at 0.4 cents each so the 175,000 point welcome offer that currently comes with the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is, for us, an effective rebate of $700.
With a bit of work, some cardholders may well be able to get yet more value out of these points but, to keep things prudent, I’m happy to stick to our $700 valuation.
Enjoy Hilton Honors Diamond Elite status
One of the big draws of the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is the fact that it offers Diamond status in Hilton’s loyalty program. These are the key Diamond tier benefits (terms apply):
- 100% Bonus Points on stays
- Complimentary breakfast
- Executive lounge access
- Space-available room upgrades
- Premium WiFi
- 48-hour room guarantee
The important thing to know about Hilton’s Diamond status is this: It’s a great benefit to have but it’s more useful the further east you travel (outside of the United States).
Within the US, Diamond status is nice to have but, partly because of this credit card, a lot of people in the US have this status so the competition for the best upgrades and the best treatment is high.
In Europe, Diamond elites are generally treated very well, but it’s when you head to Asia that you usually see the very best that Diamond status has to offer – suite upgrades are not uncommon in Asia even though they’re not guaranteed, the complimentary breakfasts are often amazing and the executive lounges on offer are usually a step above most.
Other positives to consider
Access to Hilton’s 5th night free benefit (terms apply)
Travelers with elite status with the Hilton Honors program (e.g the Diamond status that comes with the Aspire card) are given the 5th night of all award stays for free.
A single 5-night award stay at some of Hilton’s more upscale properties could see a cardholder save a considerable number of points and, by extension, a significant amount of money.
The best earning rate at Hilton properties (terms apply)
The 14 points/dollar that The Aspire Card earns at Hilton properties worldwide equates to a 5.6% rebate on all Hilton stays (based on our valuation of 0.4 cents/point) and, when you factor in the 10 bonus points/dollar that cardholders earn at most Hilton properties thanks to the Diamond elite status the card offers, the total effective rebate this card adds is a strong 9.6%. No other card can beat that return on Hilton spending.
In addition to the bonus points available for spending with Hilton, the Aspire card earns cardholders 7 points/dollar for…
- Flights booked directly with airlines
- Spending with select major car rental companies listed at americanexpress.com/rewards-info
- Spending at U.S. Restaurants
…and, based on our earlier valuation of Hilton Honors points (0.4 cents each), this equates to an effective rebate of 2.8% in all of those categories. That, however, is not a particularly great return.
There are a number of other credit cards available where the earning rates in all of those categories would be significantly higher, so it’s best to consider the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card as a card to be used on Hilton spending and a card to be held for all the great benefits it offers.
Access to Amex Offers
The Aspire Card is issued by American Express and all American Express cards give cardholders access to Amex Offers which can easily save them hundreds of dollars a year.

Bottom line
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is a must-have card for any serious Hilton fan as it offers the easiest, quickest, and most economical path to valuable Diamond elite status as well as a range of other benefits that should make it easy to recoup the annual fee. Put simply, if you plan to frequent Hilton properties in the future, this is a card you should probably have in your wallet.

[…] issues cards that offer credits at both of those chains (the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card and the Hilton Honors Aspire Card) so it seems unlikely that the Platinum Card will be given a benefit that’s specific to one […]
I had this card for several years and then cancelled two years ago because I wasnt traveling internationally as much as I had been. If I apply again either now or in a year, would I get the bonus again, or does Amex still have a lifetime ban on getting two bonuses for the same card?
