In an earlier article, we briefly compared nine of the best rate guarantees that are offered across the major hotel chains. In this article we look at Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee in a little more detail.

Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee says that if you find a lower rate elsewhere, Hilton will match it and give you a bit more on top. You get the matched rate plus a further 25% off the room rate.

What follows are the terms that matter from the full published terms and conditions. It’s more detail than you’ll find on the marketing page, but these claims are usually won or lost on a technicality, so it’s worth knowing where the traps are.

The short version

What you get Match lowest rate + 25% off the room rate
How far below Hilton’s own rate the rate you find must be Nothing stated, but Hilton may deny at 1% or less
Deadline to file claim Before booking, or within 24 hours of booking
When you cannot claim Any time up to check-in, but by phone on the day before or day of arrival
Same currency required? Yes, currency of the hotel
Must you book their lowest rate? Yes
Can you claim without booking? Yes

The basics that apply to every chain

These terms are shared across all the major hotel chain guarantees. They’re worth knowing before you go any further, because most failed claims fall down on one of them.

  • The lower rate must be for an identical booking: same hotel, same room type, same number of guests, same dates, same length of stay, same inclusions, same guarantee and cancellation policies, and same booking conditions. Even the slightest of differences and a claim is likely to be denied.
  • Comparisons are made net of taxes, gratuities, and other fees.
  • The lower rate must still be publicly available and bookable at the moment the chain checks it, not merely when you found it. This is one of the more common terms which  brings down a claim.
  • One claim per stay, and consecutive nights count as one stay.
  • Changing the booking after approval will generally void it.
  • Opaque and auction sites, unitemised packages, discount-code rates, and rates that aren’t immediately bookable are excluded everywhere.

A difference in cancellation policy is the most common reason a claim gets rejected, and that remains the case even when the rate you’ve found has the more generous policy. Ridiculous? Yes. But it happens.

The Hilton terms in detail

In summary:

If you find a lower qualified price on another booking site and your claim is accepted, Hilton will match it and give you a further 25% off your stay.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to make a ‘price match guarantee’ claim you must find a qualified price that’s lower than the official Hilton booking channel for the same accommodation and terms either before you book or within 24 hours after you make a reservation through an official Hilton booking channel.

Hilton’s terms say it may deny a claim where the percentage difference between the Hilton price and the qualifying lower price is 1% or less.

Note the wording though. It’s “may deny” rather than a hard and fast number, so this is a discretion Hilton has reserved for itself rather than a definite threshold. In practice, its best to assume that assume any difference of 1% or less will not lead to a successful claim.

The terms that you really need to know (and focus on):

  • For stays longer than one night, the Price Match Guarantee will be evaluated based on the total room price for the entire stay.
  • If your reservation is coming up in the next couple of days, Hilton recommends that you request a call rather than submit an online request.
  • If you submit your claim online, Hilton will try to independently validate it within 48 hours. If you make a claim over the phone, Hilton will try to independently validate it immediately (which is why we recommend calling in).
  • Currency: the lower price must be available in the currency of the hotel when Hilton validates the claim, and price comparisons specifically exclude changes in currency exchange rates.
  • Where Hilton’s rate is tax-inclusive, the comparison is made against the third party’s tax-inclusive rate. Mandatory resort and destination fees are excluded from the comparison.
  • Hilton requires you to have booked the lowest rate available on its own channel where multiple prices exist for the same accommodation.
  • If you claim without an existing reservation and the claim is approved, Hilton secures a tentative reservation and you have 24 hours from its claim confirmation to complete the booking, or the claim and the reservation are both cancelled.
  • The price Hilton matches is the lowest qualifying price it was able to verify, which may not be the price you submitted.
  • The new rate isn’t effective until you have an email confirmation from Hilton showing it.
  • Changes made after approval (adding guests, shortening the stay, and so on) may invalidate the claim.
  • If the competing rate is on another site’s mobile app, you must claim online rather than by phone, and you’ll need screenshots of the app.
  • Only one claim per reservation, and the name on the claim must match the name on the booking.
  • Room rates requiring a login, credit card number, or a code to view don’t qualify for Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee, and neither do member-only prices or Hilton Team Member rates.
  • If you are claiming the day before or the day of arrival, you have to phone. The online form won’t accept the claim.
  • Bookings made through an Accredited Travel Agent count as official Hilton channels, but most regular online travel agencies do not.
  • Excluded properties: all Hampton by Hilton hotels and Small Luxury Hotels properties in the People’s Republic of China, plus all Partner Accommodations (including SLH) in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal.

Note: The current Hilton’s current terms apply to claims submitted on or after 16 August 2024.

Opinion

Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee has a large number of clauses, but it’s still one of the best guarantees (because you can have it processed without actually having to make a booking) and it’s one of the easiest guarantees to get processed (for better or worse) because you can claim via the phone in real time.

Here’s a link to the full terms and conditions. Read them carefully before assuming you can make a valid claim.

    • Are you going to comment on every one of these because that’s going to get boring.

We know. You’re Rich. You don’t care if you overpay and you’re super important and super busy (so busy that you have time to read and comment upon articles like this).

  1. I believe it is almost impossible to make a successful claim. I made a claim earlier this year and the stated reason for their rejection was non-sensical. However, it was just a few dollars less (<$5) and no Hilton Honors points so no big loss.
