Hilton’s second big promotion of 2018 has been running since 1 May and offers all Hilton Honors members double points for stays made at most Hilton properties through 31 August 2018. As Hilton promotions go this a reasonably good one but I’ve only just noticed that for some of us, it’s actually better than I thought.
Earlier this year Hilton revamped its suite of American Express co-branded cards and it looks as if the hotelier is trying to encourage the take up of these cards.
I say this because, for the month of July, all Hilton Honors American Express credit card holders will earn triple points on their Hilton stays rather than just double.
Just to be clear, this offer isn’t just available to holders of the $450 premium Hilton credit card – all Hilton/Amex co-branded credit cards are eligible….including the free one!
Here’s what that actually looks like based on the status you hold with Hilton:
- No Status –
10 points/night30 points/night - Silver Status –
12 points/night32 points/night - Gold Status –
18 points/night38 points/night - Diamond Status –
20 points/night40 points/night
And those earnings are before what you’ll rake in before you take into account what points you’ll earn with whatever Hilton Honors American Express credit card you use.
Here’s how those earnings stack up at Hilton properties:
- Hilton Honors Card from American Express (the free card) – 7 points/dollar
- Hilton Honors Ascend Card ($95 annual fee) – 12 points per dollar
- Hilton Honors American Express Business Card ($95 annual fee) – 12 points/dollar
- Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card ($450 annual fee) – 14 points/dollar
If you have mid-tier status and a mid-tier card you’ll could earn 50 points/dollar in July.
A I value Hilton Honors points at approximately 0.4 cents each that’s an effective rebate of 20 cents per dollar or 20%.
You won’t find that kind of rebate on offer at Marriott, Starwood, IHG or Hyatt
I confess to not being a huge fan of the $450 Aspire card but the Ascend Card and the Business card are both pretty reasonable mid-level cards to have (I explain why I’d have the Business Card here).
Bottom Line
If you hold one of the Hilton Honors American Express cards you should probably be considering booking some Hilton stays for the month of July – there are some very good points hauls and rebates to be had.
