The latest IHG global promotion has had quite a lot of publicity, so you probably already know that you can earn 3,000 bonus points for every 2 nights that you stay at IHG properties by the end of the year.

But did you know that for select IHG brands, you should now be able to stack the global promotion with a second (less well-known) promotion and a cash back deal to really maximize your earnings and savings?

The main promotion

The global promotion is straightforward:

  • Register (here) by 31 December 2024.
  • Stay between 19 September and 31 December 2024.
  • Earn 3,000 bonus points for every 2 qualifying nights.

That’s it. Yes, there are a few terms and conditions of which you should be aware (read about those here), but there are no tricks or hacks that you need to know about to earn what the promotion is offering.

This promotion, however, should be stackable with a less well known promotion that Frequent Miler has highlighted.

The limited brands promotion

This promotion is a lot more niche than the global promotion because it applies to just five of IHG brands … and they’re not the big brands either.

Between 1 October and 31 December 2024, you can now earn 3x bonus points on all stays at the following IHG brands:

You need to register (here) to participate, but there’s nothing onerous in the key terms and conditions which look like this:

  • Members will be able to stay and earn IHG One Rewards bonus points under this Promotion beginning October 1, 2024 and ending on December 31, 2024
  • Members who did not register during the Pre-Registration Period may register for the Promotion during the Promotion Period.
  • After registering for the Promotion, a member can earn bonus points on qualifying room nights during the Promotion Period at all avid, Atwell, EVEN, voco and/or Garner hotels.
  • This offer is only available for the listed brands above.
  • To be a qualifying room night under the Promotion, the room night must fall within the Promotion Period and must be part of a Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay.
  • Room nights outside of the Promotion Period are not included, and room nights that are part of a stay that was completed prior to registration for the Promotion also are not included.
  • For purposes of this Promotion, a “Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay” is defined as a minimum one (1) night stay at a participating hotel booked under a Qualifying Rate, with total spend exceeding US $30 (or local currency equivalent) for each night.
  • Stays booked using Rewards Nights or Points & Cash are not Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stays for purposes of this Promotion.
  • Bookings made through online travel agencies or other reservation sites such as booking.com or expedia.com also do not qualify under this Promotion.
  • For the 3X Unlimited Promotion, earning “3X” or “3X bonus points” on stays through December 31, 2024 means the total number of regular “base points” and promotional “bonus points” combined will equal three (3) times the base points the member would normally receive just for being an IHG One Rewards member. For example, under the 3X Unlimited Promotion, for a one-night Qualifying Stay with a room rate of $100.00 at an IHG hotel with a 10 points per USD earn rate for base points, the member would earn 1,000 base points (10 points x $100 = 1,000 points) and an additional 2,000 promotional bonus points, for a total of 3,000 points.
  • The promotional bonus points under this Promotion are calculated based solely on the base points the member is eligible to earn for a Qualifying Stay just for being an IHG One Rewards member, and any Elite status bonus points or any other bonus or promotional points the member may be eligible to receive for the same stay are not included.

Full terms and conditions (which you should read carefully) can be found on the promotion page.

Stacking the two promotions

There’s nothing that we can see that would prevent someone from earning what both promotions are offering on a single stay so, for example, if you were to book a 4 night stay at a participating brand at a cost of, let’s say, $700 ($175/night seems about right), this is what your earnings would look like:

  • Base earnings = 7,000 points (10 points/dollar at all five brands)
  • Global promotion = 6,000 points (3,000 bonus points per 2 nights)
  • Brand promotion = 14,000 points

Total earnings = 27,000 bonus points.

This however doesn’t take into account any bonuses you’re entitled to if you have IHG One Rewards elite status or any extra points that you would earn if you used an IHG co-branded credit card to pay for your stay.

So, for example, an IHG One Rewards Platinum elite member* who uses the IHG One Rewards Premier credit card to pay for their qualifying stay would see their earnings look like this:

  • Base earnings = 7,000 points (10 points/dollar at all five brands)
  • Elite status bonus = 4,200 points (60% bonus)
  • Global promotion = 6,000 points (3,000 bonus points per 2 nights)
  • Brand promotion = 14,000 points
  • Points from the IHG Premier Card = 7,000 points (10 points/dollar on all eligible IHG spending)

Total earnings = 38,200 bonus points.

As we value IHG points at 0.4 cents each (based on the value that we know we can get out of them with relative ease), these points could be said to be worth ~$153 which would represent an effective rebate of almost 22%.

But the savings can get even better than that.

*The IHG Premier card gives all cardholders Platinum status as one of its benefits.

Don’t forget the cash back sites

The two key cash back sites that we use are currently offering some good (but not amazing) deals on IHG stays that would trigger these promotions.

Rakuten, for example, is currently offering 10% cash back on bookings at 4 out of the 5 brands participating in the second promotion (Voco doesn’t even get a mention) …

… so that’s either a further 10% saving or, if you choose to take your Rakuten earnings in the form of Amex Membership Rewards Points, that’s an extra 10 Amex points/dollar that you can earn.

If you’d rather use Topcashback.com, that’s a site that’s also currently offering 10% cash back at four out of the five brands participating in the second promotion, and it’s also offering 9% back at stays made at Voco branded properties.

Whichever portal you choose to use, make sure you take screenshots as you click through the various pages and make your booking(s) just in case you need to put in a claim for missing cash back at a later date.

Lastly …

Keep in mind that as well as the bonus points promotions mentioned in this article, IHG is also currently running a sale for stays at its European properties, and as Europe now has a reasonable number of voco properties, this could offer you yet another way to save on a future IHG booking.

Bottom line

As well as its well publicised global promotion, IHG is also currently running another promotion on the side in which its offering bonus points for stays at five of its less well known brands. These two promotions should stack nicely, and if you add to that the cash back that you can currently earn on IHG stays through Rakuten and Topcashback.com, a future IHG stay could end up being more rewarding than you expected.
