Update 29 March 2022: Finnair has now announced that it will offer its new cabin designs (and its Premium Economy Cabin) on the Helsinki – DFW route from 12 May 2022

In the past year, we’ve seen Finnair placing more emphasis on the US market with the addition of new services to Miami, Los Angeles, and New York as well as the promise of a new service to Seattle from 1 June. The airline was also supposed to be launching flights between Helsinki and Dallas/Fort Worth in February but for reasons that Finnair never really clarified, that route was delayed.

Now, however, it looks like the Helsinki – Dallas route is a go and will be launching in a few days’ time.

Finnair’s new Dallas/Fort Worth route

Finnair already offers non-stop services to Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Chicago from its Helsinki home, it has recently launched new services from Stockholm to Miami and Los Angeles, and it has a new service between Stockholm and New York JFK on the way, so it was a little surprising to read that the airline wasn’t quite done with its US route expansion.

From 27 March 2022, Finnair will launch a new route between Helsinki and Dallas/Fort Worth on the following schedule:

AY19 HEL 12:25 – 15:05 DFW (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun)
AY20 DFW 16:55 – 11:10+1 day HEL (Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun)

When first announced, this service was only set to operate through to the end of October (the end of the northern hemisphere summer season) but now appears to be being offered year-round.

Update: The new Finnair cabins (including Premium Economy) will be offered on this route from 12 May 2022

The Dallas/Fort Worth route will be operated by Finnair’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft and based on the current seat maps (and the fact that Premium Economy isn’t yet being sold on this route), it looks as if these will be the aircraft with older (but excellent) reverse herringbone Business Class seats and will also offer the widest Economy Class seats available (18″) (the new Business Class and new Premium Economy cabin may be offered later in the year).

I was fortunate enough to try out this A350’s Business Class cabin on one of its first-ever flights way back in 2015 and the cabin is as good now as it was then.

Given the choice of aircraft and airline with which to fly to Asia or across the Atlantic, Finnair and its A350 would be very high on my list, and the fact that Finnair is part of the oneworld alliance (meaning that its flights can be credited to the American Airlines AAdvantage program and the British Airways Executive Club) is a nice added bonus.

A final thing to note about this new route is that the times are good but not as good as when the route was first announced.

The late departure out of Europe has now been substituted for a 12:25 departure which while still giving flyers the opportunity to connect to this service from elsewhere in Europe, means that connections may be tighter than they would have been originally.

The afternoon arrival into Dallas/Fort Worth means that it should be possible to connect on to other cities in the US (using the American Airlines network) without having to add in an overnight layover, and the late afternoon departure out of Dallas/Fort Worth means that it should be relatively straightforward to connect to this route from a wide variety of US cities.

Bottom Line

Finnair’s new route between Helsinki and Dallas/Fort Worth will now launch on 27 March 2022 (delayed from 7 February 2022). The service will be operated by the airline’s Airbus A350 aircraft and is currently set to run year-round.
