Thoughts
Ok, so this isn’t the most generous of offers, but I guess it’s better than nothing, and as the Executive Club’s move to a revenue-based Avios collection system has made earning Avios though flying considerably harder than it was 18 months ago, any opportunity to earn more than the usual number of Avios is welcome.
This is what the earning rates look like under the promotion rules:
- Blue Member – 12 Avios per £1
- Bronze Member – 14 Avios per £1
- Silver Member – 16 Avios per £1
- Gold Member – 18 Avios per £1
There are, however, a few important things/restrictions to keep in mind when considering what this promotion offers as they make the promotion considerably less interesting/useful than it may otherwise have been.
Firstly, only bookings made following registration and by 18 December 2024 are eligible for double Avios, so existing bookings will not get the increased earnings. This is disappointing, but in line with most other similar offers we’ve seen British Airways publish in recent years.
Secondly, only accounts registered to a UK address are eligible for this promotion and that will exclude a significant number of BAEC members. Given that the promotion is already restricted to a limited number of destinations, this seems a little harsh.
Thirdly, there are some key destinations that I would have expected to appear in the list of destinations eligible for this promotion that don’t appear to be there.
Popular destinations like Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Phuket (amongst others) are all served by Qatar Airways but are not eligible destinations for the purpose of this promotion and I have no idea why.
Finally, don’t overlook the rule that says that only the first ten segments flown will be eligible for the double Avios that are on offer as if you end up with multiple eligible bookings, it may end up being worth your while to make sure that you only credit the high-earning bookings to the Executive Club and credit the lower-earning bookings elsewhere.
Overall, if you were already planning to book flights to one or more of the eligible destinations (for travel between 20 January and 30 June 2025) this will probably be a nice offer for you to receive.
For everyone else, however, I don’t see much here that would encourage new bookings.
Bottom line
Between today and 18 December, British Airways is running a double Avios promotion for travel to select destinations served by BA/Qatar Airways.
Unfortunately, this promotion appears to be very limited in scope – only members with Executive Club accounts registered to a UK address can participate, existing bookings are not eligible, only 40 destinations appear on the promotion’s eligibility list, a number of popular destinations have been excluded, and only the first ten segments flown will earn double Avios – so this is a considerably less useful/interesting promotion that some of the other doble Avios promotions that we’ve seen in recent years.
What do you think of this promotion? Will you be participating?
