One of the things I love most about writing this blog is that the research I have to do means that I’m constantly learning new things about the travel industry and constantly discovering ways I can save cash when I travel.
While I’m a big fan of making airline bookings way in advance I’m beginning to hold off from making any hotel/accommodation bookings until much closer to my actual trips – I’m finding that I’m getting better deals that way and, by delaying the reservations I make, I’m finding myself in a better position to make the most of any hotel promotions that come around.
Although the overwhelming majority of my cash bookings tend to go Marriott’s way I’m definitely the sort of traveler who likes to look around for good deals and I’m pretty good at not letting my chase for status cloud my judgment…and that’s how I came across Kimpton’s last minute deals webpage.
Kimpton is the boutique brand that now sits within the IHG portfolio and it’s a brand that I don’t think I’ve ever actually stayed at.
It’s not that I’ve been deliberately avoiding Kimpton all these years it’s more that I’ve never really noticed any great deals on offer and I’ve always felt that there was better value to be had elsewhere….especially as I generally start getting a nervous twitch when a room rate starts with any number greater than a 2!
The Kimpton last minute deals page may just change all of that.
When Kimpton calls something a last minute deal it really is a last minute deal as the offers I’m seeing are only for the week ahead – this isn’t a page likely to appeal to the advance planner – but that shouldn’t put you off…there are some good deals to be had here.
I’m not about to suggest that Kimpton is offering mind-blowingly low rates to anyone who’s prepared to book at the last minute but when I see rates at the Kimpton Everly Hotel in West Hollywood from $236…..
…and rates at the Kimpton Hotel Enventi in New York from $169…..
…..I know that this is a page to bear in mind for the future.
Sure this isn’t exactly high season in NYC or LA but seasons don’t generally dictate how good a property is – most of the time a property is either good or bad regardless of the time of year – so these last minute deals can make some very nice hotels affordable enough for a lot of us to try out when normally we’re priced out.
In fact I’m a big fan of traveling to places when it’s “out of season” because I find there are less tourists to navigate though and I find myself getting a far better feel for what it’s like to be a local…..and the cheaper prices are a nice bonus.
Chicago is a pretty good example of a city where it’s definitely not prime season right now and that means you can pick up some very nice deals at some highly respected properties….like the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago:
Yes, you may be able to find some of these rates on sites like Expedia but don’t forget that you’ll only receive status benefits and credit towards elite status if you book direct with the hotelier….and that’s where this last minute deal page can come in very useful.
Bottom Line
If you like making solid plans in advance then the Kimpton last minute deals page probably isn’t for you but, if you’re leaving things late, this is definitely a page to bear in mind when looking over your options.
One word of caution: don’t just assume that the best deal on offer is the deal shown on the Kimpton last minute deals page – make sure you do your research and check that nowhere else if offering anything better and, if they are, it may be an idea to try a price guarantee challenge through IHG.
