American Airlines says that it’s preparing for “a big summer” in Charlotte and by that it means that it plans to add services to/from its hub and that it has just reopened a renovated Charlotte Admirals Club at Concourse B.

More Flights For Charlotte

American says that it plans to increase the average number of its daily Charlotte flights from 664 to “more than 700” by the end of 2019 and it’s starting with the following additions:

  • 2 more daily flights to Baltimore
  • 2 more daily flights to Fort Lauderdale
  • 1 more daily flight to Orlando
  • 1 more daily flight to Newark

Other service increases at that are in the works include…

  • Increasing service to Chicago O’Hare by 1 more daily flight
  • Increasing service to Los Angeles by 2 more daily flights
  • Increasing service to New York JFK by 1 more daily flight

The new flights go on sale from 4 March 2019 for travel from 6 June 2019.

Charlotte Admirals Club Reopens

Following a full refurbishment American Airlines reopened its Admirals club at Concourse B yesterday (20 February) giving back passengers a second lounge option for the first time since July last year (there’s another Admirals Club at Concourse C).

The refurbished lounge is past security and located between gates 3 and 5. It’s opening hours match those of its sister club on Concourse C (04:45 – 22:30) and, according to American, it now offers a lot more of what guests want.

The beverage options have been enhanced (these include complimentary alcoholic beverages like select wines, beers and well liquors), a “modern complimentary food bar” has been introduced….

…and will offer “more robust food options” than were previously available (presumably this means that we’ll see more than a few lumps of cheese and some crackers).

Lastly, the renovated lounge also now features a Business Center with 5 “semi-private” workstations.

This is a considerably smaller lounge than the one you’ll find at Concourse C – this one holds no more than 100 guests and covers approximately 4,500 square feet while its larger sister lounge has room for over 450 guests and covers over 22,500 square feet – but this may suit some travelers. Not everyone likes a cavernous lounge.

Access to the lounge is restricted to Admirals Club members, Citi AAdvantage Executive Card holders, international Business Class passengers and oneworld Sapphire/Emerald status holders flying the same day with a oneworld airline.

The American Airlines website still says that one-day passes are not accepted at Charlotte’s lounges….

….but this may change now that the second lounge has reopened.

Bottom Line

It looks like Charlotte will be seeing noticeably more service from American Airlines in 2019 so it’s just as well the second Admirals Club has reopened.

With Spirit also soon increasing the number of flights it offers out of Charlotte to some of the same destinations that American Airlines serves (Baltimore, Ft Lauderdale, Orlando and Newark) it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens to airfares out of this American Airlines hub – it doesn’t sound like the world’s biggest Airline will be having things all its own way.
