Now that we’re into October and into the fourth quarter of 2024, there’s a good chance that we’re not going to see any more major hotel promotions announced before the end of the year and with that in mind, here are all the big promotions from Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott that cover some or all of the period between now and 31 December 2024.

Hilton’s Power Up promotion

a room with a bed and a couch
A wide-angle view of the room.

Only two out of the four major miles & points chains are offering major global promotions that run right the way up to the end of the year and Hilton is one of them.

The latest Hilton Power Up promotion is a simple as it gets:

  • Register (here) by 31 December 2024.
  • Earn 2,500 bonus points on every stay made after registration and through 31 December 2024.
  • There is no limit to the total amount of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • This promotion is valid at any hotel or resort within the Hilton Portfolio.

This is a promotion that rewards those who make multiple short stays rather than those who make a small number of long stays, so the nature of your travels will dictate just how lucrative this promotion is for you.

If you want to maximize points earnings in this promotion you should look to break up any longer trips into multiple stays if possible.

We value Hilton Honors points at 0.4 cents/point so for us, this promotion is essentially offering a maximum rebate of $10 per stay, and that’s not particularly exciting.

It’s better than nothing if you already have plans to stay at a Hilton Honors property while the promotion is running, but it’s not going to be tempting enough to get anyone to move their business over to Hilton or to make new bookings.

Hyatt’s two promotions

a building with a flag on the front

Don’t let the headline fool you. The fact that Hyatt has two promotions running right now may sound impressive, but if you don’t already know what these promotions are, you should keep your expectations low.

Promo 1 – Earn double Hyatt points at 320+ properties (all regions except Americas)

  • Register (here) by 4 November 2024.
  • Earn double points starting with your second qualifying stay after registration and through 20 December 2024.
  • This promotion is valid at 320+ participating hotels in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific.
  • A maximum of 20,000 bonus points may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not participating in this promotion.
  • Your first eligible stay must be completed at a participating property.

The obvious annoyance within the terms and conditions here is the line that confirms that the first stay during the promotion period is excluded, and things don’t get much better when you realise that the bonus on offer is capped at just 20,000 points.

With Hyatt awarding 5 base points on stays made outside of promotion periods, the total earnings on offer at participating properties during the promotion is 10 points/dollar, but the 20,000 points cap means that you’ll only earn that rebate on the first $4,000 of eligible spending.

We value Hyatt points at 1.4 cents each so, effectively, the promotion is offering us a bonus rebate of 7% with the rebate capped at $280.

Full terms and conditions (which you should read carefully) can be found on the registration page.

Promo 2 – Earn double Hyatt points at Mr & Mrs Smith Hotels (all regions)

  • Register (here) by 30 November 2024.
  • Earn double points starting with your first qualifying stay after registration and through 24 December 2024.
  • This promotion is valid at 800+ Mr & Mrs Smith hotels participating in World of Hyatt when booked through one of Hyatt’s booking portals.
  • There is no cap on the number of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • All Eligible Stays must be completed by December 24, 2024.

Not really an earth-shattering promotion, is it?

The good news here is that Mr & Mrs Smith bookings made through Hyatt will earn 5 points/dollar just as regular Hyatt bookings do, they’ll earn World of Hyatt members their elite bonuses and World of Hyatt members elite night credits and will earn anyone who has linked their Hyatt account and American Airlines account AAdvantage miles (just as regular Hyatt bookings do).

The bad news is that Mr & Mrs Smith properties do not have to honor a lot of the benefits associated with the World of Hyatt (late check out, complimentary breakfast for Globalists, suite upgrades, etc…), and while Mr & Mrs Smith properties are now bookable with Hyatt points, award pricing is dynamic and pegged to the cash cost of the booking and that makes it hard to get outsized value from a points balance.

IHG’s two promotions

Just like Hyatt, IHG is currently running two promotions, and just like Hilton’s Power Up promotion, both are running right up to the last day of the year.

Promo 1 – Earn 3,000 points every 2 nights

  • Register (here) by 31 December 2024.
  • Earn 3,000 bonus points for every 2 qualifying nights consumed after registration through 31 December 2024.
  • This promotion is valid at all properties participating in IHG One Rewards.
  • There is no cap on the number of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • For purposes of the promotion, a “Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay” is defined as a minimum one (1) night stay at a participating hotel booked under a Qualifying Rate, with total spend exceeding US $30 (or local currency equivalent) for each night.
  • Stays booked using Rewards Nights or Points & Cash are not Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stays for purposes of this promotion.

We value IHG One Rewards points at 0.4 cents each so for us, this promotion is offering an effective rebate of $12 for every two qualifying nights that we consume. So this isn’t likely to be a promotion that’s going to get IHG fans particularly excited.

Still, some bonus points are better than none, so we should probably be thankful for whatever we’re given and be happy that there’s no cap on earnings in this promotion (other than the natural cap set by the number of nights this promotion covers).

Full terms and conditions (which you should read carefully) can be found on the promotion page.

Promo 2 – The limited brands promotion

This promotion is a lot more niche than the global promotion because it applies to just five of IHG brands … and they’re not the big brands either.

  • Register (here) by 31 December 2024.
  • Between 1 October and 31 December 2024, you can earn 3x bonus points on all stays made after registration at the following IHG brands:
  • There is no cap on the number of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • For purposes of this Promotion, a “Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stay” is defined as a minimum one (1) night stay at a participating hotel booked under a Qualifying Rate, with total spend exceeding US $30 (or local currency equivalent) for each night.
  • Stays booked using Rewards Nights or Points & Cash are not Promotion Eligible Qualifying Stays for purposes of this Promotion.

There’s nothing that we can see that would prevent someone from earning what both current IHG promotions are offering on a single stay so, for example, if you were to book a 4 night stay at a participating brand at a cost of, let’s say, $700, this is what your earnings would look like:

  • Base earnings = 7,000 points (10 points/dollar at all five brands)
  • Global promotion = 6,000 points (3,000 bonus points per 2 nights)
  • Brand promotion = 14,000 points

Total earnings = 27,000 bonus points (excluding any elite status bonuses).

As we value IHG One Rewards points at 0.4 cents each, a booking such as the one used in the example above would see us earn an effective rebate of $108 or ~15.5% and that’s pretty good going considering we would still have an elite bonus to add to that points total.

Marriott’s two promotions

a bed with white sheets and pillows in a room

Here’s another major player in the miles and points world that currently has two promotions running, but as one is specifically aimed at holders of Marriott’s co-branded credit cards, there’s really only one big Marriott global promotion.

Promo 1 – Earn 3,000 points every 2 nights

  • Register (here) by 12 November 2024.
  • Earn …
    • 2,000 bonus points on each stay of 2 or more nights consumed after registration and by 26 November 2024.
    • An additional 2,000 bonus points on each stay of 2 or more nights at MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy destinations.
  • There is no cap on the number of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • The promotion earning period is for eligible paid nights completed between September 10, 2024, and November 26, 2024, and is only for stays booked through direct Marriott Bonvoy channels at properties participating in Marriott Bonvoy, including MGM Collection.
  • Award redemption stays, including Cash + Points Awards, Free Night Awards, or a Points redemption, are not eligible for the promotion.

Full terms and conditions (which you should read carefully) are available on the promotion page.

Promo 2 – The co-branded cardholder promotion

  • Register (here) by 12 November 2024 (you need to be eligible and signed in to your Bonvoy account for this link to work).
  • Earn 2,000 bonus points on each paid stay of 2 or more nights consumed after registration and by 26 November 2024.
  • There is no cap on the number of bonus points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • To be eligible to earn the additional 2,000 bonus points on each Eligible Stay of two or more nights during the Promotion Period, you must be the primary account holder and have an active Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card that was issued prior to August 16, 2024, in the following countries: Canada, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, United Kingdom, United States, United Arab Emirates, Qatar.
  • Only paid stays of two or more nights completed after registration that occur, in whole or in part, during the Promotion Period at Marriott Bonvoy participating properties are eligible for this promotion.
Award redemption stays, including Cash + Points Awards, Free Night Awards, or a Points redemption stay, are not eligible for this promotion.
  • All Marriott Bonvoy properties are participating in the promotion except for the following properties, which are not eligible for this promotion: The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, and owner-occupied weeks at Marriott Vacation Club®, Grand Residences by Marriott®, Marriott Grand Residence Club®, Sheraton Vacation Club®, Westin Vacation Club®, The Ritz-Carlton Club®, St. Regis Residence Club® and Luxury Collection Residence Club.

Overall, neither of these promotions is going to get many people excited, bit they’re better than nothing at all.

Disappointingly, one night stays are excluded, award stays are excluded, and points and cash stays are excluded (so that’s not a great start) and on top of all that, the effective rebates on offer are far from generous.

We value Bonvoy points at 0.6 cents each (based on the value we can get out of them with relative ease) and this means that we value the effective rebate being offered by the global promotion at just $12/two nights. At Marriott’s MGM properties, that’s doubled to $24/two nights.

Using the same valuation, the cardholder promotion offers a further effective rebate of $12/two nights meaning that for some Bonvoy members there’s up to $36/two nights up for grabs … but as the overwhelming majority of Bonvoy members won’t be going anywhere near an eligible MGM property, it’s hard to suggest that there’s any more than $24/two nights available through these promotions.

Bottom line

For now, that’s it. One Hilton promotion, two Hyatt promotions, two IHG promotions, and two Marriott promotions, and while it’s possible that we see one or more of these hotel giants offer something new around Black Friday/Cyber Monday (which is when the Marriott promotions are set to end), there’s nothing that we’ve seen to date to suggest that something exciting may be on the horizon.
