I’ve spent most of the past 25 years splitting my time between Los Angeles and London/Greater London, so it’s safe to say that a lot of my trips this century have involved flights across the Atlantic and a lot of my travel plans have been built around my transatlantic life.
Now, however, things have changed.
For the foreseeable future, I’m going to be spending most of my time in the UK and in Europe with only the occasional visit back to the United States, so this will have a noticeable impact on my travel patterns.
The biggest difference will be that while, historically, I’ve been flying in and out of the United States a significant number of times every year, in 2026 I may not get back to the US at all.
A bonus of spending more time on the eastern side of the pond will be that I get to do a lot more trips within Europe and I’ll probably end up doing considerably more trips to Africa and Asia as well.
From a TFM point of view, I don’t expect this to change things too much as I’ll still be firmly embedded within the miles and point world and I’ll still be as beholden to the whims of the major US credit card issuers as ever before.
The types of hotels that I review won’t really be changing as I’ve never really focused on properties in the US, so you can expect to continue seeing reviews of properties in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and anywhere else that strikes me as being interesting and worth a visit.
The types of flights that I review and the airlines that I review, however, will change.
Once I get through my current backlog of reviews, I’m unlikely to be looking at any of the US carriers, and British Airways is likely to feature a lot less as well, but this means that I should get to write about quite a few airlines that I’ve neglected to review for a bit too long – Etihad, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Air France, and KLM are just some of the airlines I’m hoping to fly with in the not too distant future and all being well, reviews should follow.
I’m genuinely excited.
Europe is full of cities that I’ve long wanted to visit but haven’t had the time to thanks to my back-and-forth trips across the Atlantic, and it looks like I’m finally going to have time to visit more of Asia and time to check off the number one destination on my “must visit” list – Angkor Wat.
Just typing that name puts a smile on my face, and that’s a great feeling because it has been quite some time since the thought of a trip got me genuinely excited.
Obviously, with spending so much of my time outside of the US I’ll have to reconsider my credit card strategy and I may have to review airline and hotel programs that I use most (Hyatt pushing its award chart off a very high cliff hasn’t helped matters!), but those are subjects for another time and another article.
What I’m really hoping is that I’ll now be able to get back to writing a lot more frequently than I have in recent months and, with a bit of luck, I’ll get to visit some places worth reviewing.
I’ve already got bookings for Singapore, Rome, Paris, and Istanbul, and if I can find a good Business Class fare, I’ll be adding Hong Kong to that list as well, so that should be enough to be getting on with. All I have to do now is cross my fingers that this will all be fun 🙂
