After two days of teasers, United Airlines has now revealed that it plans, what it’s calling, its largest transatlantic expansion in history with the launch of 10 new flights and the addition of 5 new destinations in the summer of 2022.

United’s New Transatlantic Destinations

Amman, Jordan

From 5 May 2022, United will offer a new service between Washington, D.C. and Amman, Jordan. The route will be operated 3x/week by United’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft

Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal

United will add the Azores to its route network from 13 May 2022 when it launches a new daily service between New York/Newark and Ponta Delgada.

Ponta Delgada will be United’s 3rd Portuguese destination and will see the airline offering more flights between the U.S. and Portugal than any other North American airline as well as making it the only airline to fly to the Azores from the New York metro area.

United will operate this route using a brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft featuring United’s new interior with seatback entertainment, Bluetooth connectivity, and overhead bin space for every customer.

Bergen, Norway

On 20 May 2022, United will become the only U.S. carrier offering flights to Norway when it launches a new route between Newark and Bergen. The new route will be offered 3x/week and will be operated by a Boeing 757-200.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

From 2 June 2022, United will offer a 3x/week service between Newark and Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands and will operate the route with a Boeing 767-300ER. This will be the first and only flight between the U.S. and Mallorca and will add to United’s existing service to Madrid and Barcelona.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Seven days after it launches its new service to Mallorca, United will also start to offer a new service to another Spanish island – Teneriffe.

From 9 June 2022, United will use a Boeing 757-200 to operate a 3x/week service between Newark and Tenerife, and this will make United the only airline to fly direct between the Canary Islands and North America as well as the airline with the most Spanish destinations served out of North America.

United’s New European Services

As well as adding new destinations to its route map, United is also adding flights to a number of European cities in anticipation of a resurgence in visitors. Next spring United will add:

  • New daily flights between Denver and Munich which will join the airline’s existing service from Denver to Frankfurt and London which is expected to resume in March.
  • New daily flights between Chicago and Milan which will join existing seasonal flights between Chicago and Rome.
  • New daily service between Washington, D.C. and Berlin which will join United’s other service to Berlin from Newark.

As well as the above, United will also add an additional daily flight from Newark to Dublin and Rome.

Suspended Routes Returning

Alongside the new route announcements today, United has also confirmed that it will bring back a number of routes that were suspended when the pandemic put a halt to worldwide travel. Those routes and their relaunch dates are as follows:

  • San Francisco – Bangalore will restart as a daily service from 26 March 2022.
  • Newark – Nice will restart as a daily service from 29 April 2022.
  • Chicago – Zurich will restart as a daily service from 23 April 2022.
  • A second daily flight between Newark and Frankfurt will return from 23 April 2022
  • Flights from Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and New York/Newark to Tokyo Haneda are expected to return by 26 March 2022.

At the time of writing, it doesn’t look as if any of these routes have been loaded into the schedules but if this announcement follows the same format as other announcements from United, we should start seeing at least some of these routes available to be booked after this weekend’s updates.

Bottom Line

United has finally stopped teasing us and announced plans for a significant expansion to its transatlantic offering. Summer 2022 will see five new destinations added to United’s route map (Amman, Ponta Delgada, Bergen, Pama de Mallorca, and Teneriffe) as well as new services to three European cities (Munich, Milan, and Berlin).

United has also confirmed that a number of routes that were suspended due to the pandemic will return in 2022 with Bangalore and Tokyo Haneda both rejoining the network and with select services to Zurich, Nice, and Frankfurt also being rebooted.

What do you think of United’s plans? Did the announcement live up to the hype?
