American Express has launched a new offer for card members which allows them to save on select IHG stays, and while Amex IHG offers aren’t particularly unusual, this one stands out thanks to the fact that isn’t restricted to select bookings in North America and the Caribbean.

Quick thoughts

The obvious bit of good news here is that this offer is valid at select properties in the UK, Japan, and Germany as well as at properties in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

That makes a nice change.

Another small bit of good news from the terms and conditions is that, as is now common with Amex offers, the spending required to trigger the rebate doesn’t need to be made in a single transaction, so there’s no need for a cardholder to hit the $250 spending target with a single booking … although most probably will.

The final bit of good news that we can see is that this offer has been targeted to all of our Membership Rewards cards (consumer and business), so this is clearly an offer that is being widely ‘targeted’.

With the good news, however, comes a little bit of bad news.

Firstly, the list of excluded properties (across all participating locations) is extensive – it runs to five pages and 50+ UK properties are not participating – so make sure you check the terms and conditions closely to ensure that whatever plans you have to trigger this offer don’s include a non-participating hotel.

Secondly, because Amex doesn’t issue any IHG Rewards credit cards, holders of IHG Rewards cards are going to have to miss out on some points if they’re to make the most of this offer.

Having said that, keep in mind that you don’t have to put all of your room and room charge spending on your targeted Amex card to trigger this offer (just $250), so if you’re going to be spending more than the $250 needed to trigger the rebate and you hold an IHG Rewards credit card, it will probably be worth asking the front desk if you can split your final bill across two cards – $250 on your Amex card and the rest on your IHG Rewards card.

Make sure you read the terms and conditions of your targeted offer carefully before making any bookings (because there are a lot of exclusions) and make sure that you maximise your earnings by, if possible, adding the offer to a credit card which will earn you bonus points for travel/hotel stays.
