Qatar Airways has launched a new version of the bonus Avios promotion which we saw running in May, and this time around there are a few key differences that you should keep in mind.

Usually, this offer is for a 30% bonus and is restricted to banking currencies only. This time around there’s a 25% bonus on offer, ALL (Accor’s loyalty program) and Shangri-La Circle are included, and Qatar Airways is throwing in an extra bonus for every 100,000 Avios created in one move.

For US readers this means that Citi ThankYou points can now be converted to Avios at a rate of 1 point to 1.25 Avios (excluding the extra bonus for every 100k Avios created),

An important thing to be aware of here is that this isn’t a Citi offer. You will not see this offer on Citi.com or on the ThankYou site. This is a Qatar Airways offer so the bonus points will be awarded by the airline and not by the bank.

Key terms

  • These Terms and Conditions govern the campaign, organized by Qatar Airways Privilege Club enabling Privilege Club Members to earn flat 25% bonus Avios when they convert eligible rewards points earned with a Participating Partner to Avios with Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

  • The bonus Avios will be calculated per transaction and not on the cumulative sum of Avios converted from Rewards Points during the Campaign Period.
  • The conversion of Rewards Points to Avios is subject to the conversion ratio and terms and conditions set forth by the relevant Participating Partner.
  • Bonus Avios will be credited as per the transaction date notified by the relevant Participating Partner to Qatar Airways.
  • Bonus Avios earned as part of this campaign will be credited to a Member’s Privilege Club account by 15th November 2024.

Citi transfers

Citi ThankYou Points transfer over to the Qatar Airways Privilege Club in a ratio of 1:1. Other banking and loyalty currencies may transfer across in different ratios.

During this promotion that ratio increases to 1:1.25 and if you create 100,000 Avios from your Citi balance (i.e. convert 80,000 Citi ThankYou Points to Avios), the extra 10,000 Avios that Qatar Airways will give you will boost that ratio to 1:1.375 effectively giving you a 37.5% conversion bonus.

That’s one of the best conversion bonuses (to Avios) that we’ve seen for at least a couple of years, although if you cannot trigger the extra bonus, keep in mind that you can get a 30% bonus for converting Chase Ultimate Rewards to Avios right now.

Transfers between Citi and Qatar Airways are instantaneous, but the bonus points that are awarded by Qatar Airways will not appear in your Privilege Club account for up to 45 days after the transfer has taken place (in previous promotions similar to this one, I received my bonus points after 16 days and 18 days respectively).

Keep in mind that Qatar Airways Avios can be easily transferred across to British Airways (and from there to Iberia Plus, Finnair Plus, and Aer Lingus AerClub) so any Citi ThankYou Points that are converted to Avios can be used to book the better awards that these programs offer as well as the better awards offered by Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Bottom line

Qatar Airways is offering a bonus of 25% for conversions of various loyalty currencies to Avios in the Qatar Airways Privilege Club as well as an added bonus for conversions that generate 100,000 Avios in one move.

In the US, Citi is the major Qatar Airways partner and with ThankYou points readily available through cards like the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card and the Citi® Double Cash Card, there should be quite a few people for whom this promotion offers a great chance to boost an Avios balance.
