New Marriott cardholder promotion: 2,000 bonus points on select stays

A little earlier, we wrote about a new promotion that Hyatt has launched for holders of its co-branded credit cards, and it now looks like Marriott has followed that lead with its own promotion for most co-branded cardholders in eleven countries across the globe.

The promotion

An eligible Marriott Bonvoy cardholder can earn 2,000 bonus points on each eligible paid stay of two or more nights at all select properties participating in Marriott Bonvoy between 10 September and 26 November 2024.

Key terms

• Registration of your Marriott Bonvoy Account is required.
• After you register for this promotion between August 27, 2024, and November 12, 2024, you can earn 2,000 bonus points on each Eligible Stay of two or more nights at Marriott Bonvoy participating properties that, in whole or in part, occur between September 10, 2024, and November 26, 2024 (the “Promotion Period”).
• To be eligible to earn the additional 2,000 bonus points on each Eligible Stay of two or more nights during the Promotion Period, you must be the primary account holder and have an active Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card that was issued prior to August 16, 2024, in the following countries:
  • Canada
  • China
  • India
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar.
• Only paid stays of two or more nights completed after registration that occur, in whole or in part, during the Promotion Period at Marriott Bonvoy participating properties are eligible for this promotion.
• A “stay” is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/checkout activity on any points-eligible rate.
• Only one room at one property on each Eligible Stay is counted toward a member’s eligible nights for this promotion.
• Award redemption stays, including Cash + Points Awards, Free Night Awards, or a Points redemption stay, are not eligible for this promotion.
• Only bookings made through direct Marriott Channels are eligible for this promotion.
• All Marriott Bonvoy properties are participating in the promotion except for the following properties, which are not eligible for this promotion: The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, and owner-occupied weeks at Marriott Vacation Club®, Grand Residences by Marriott®, Marriott Grand Residence Club®, Sheraton Vacation Club®, Westin Vacation Club®, The Ritz-Carlton Club®, St. Regis Residence Club® and Luxury Collection Residence Club.
• There is no limit to the number of times the bonus can be earned for Eligible Stays during the Promotion Period.
• The 2,000 bonus points on each Eligible Stay of two or more nights at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels should appear in your Marriott Bonvoy account within 3-5 business days after the stay posts and will not appear on your bank issued credit card statement.

If you can see that in your account, you’re eligible. If you can’t, Marriott doesn’t think you qualify.

On the whole, it’s hard for us to get too excited about this promotion because …

1. It requires a stay of at least two nights (we do a lot of 1-night stays)
2. We value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.6 cents each meaning that the promotion is offering us an effective rebate of just $12/two nights.
3. Award bookings and points cash bookings are excluded.

It’s also worth noting that if you have only just successfully applied for a co-branded credit card, you won’t be able to make the most of this promotion as only Bonvoy members who were cardholders before 16 August 2024 are eligible.

All of that negativity aside, however, it’s good to see co-branded cardholders from around the world being included (and not just US cardholders), and it’s good to see that this isn’t limited to just a handful of Marriott’s brands.

Also, be aware that alongside this promotion, Marriott has also just launched a new global promotion whose dates overlap with this one and that means that both promotions should stack.

On their own, neither promotion is particularly rewarding or compelling, but when stacked together, they offer a more meaningful (if still small) effective rebate.

Note: This list is limited to cards that are still open to new applicants. Holders of older cards like the Ritz-Carlton® credit card should also be eligible.

Bottom line

I you hold a Marriott co-branded credit card now would be a good time to check your Bonvoy promotions page as you should be able to register for a deal offering you 2,000 bonus Bonvoy points for every 2-night stay consumed between 10 September and 26 September 2024.

As promotions go, this is yet another weak one from Marriott, but it’s better than nothing and it looks a little better when viewed alongside the global promotion that also launched today.
