American Express has launched two new targeted offers for spending made with Virgin Atlantic this morning and as both are significantly different from one another, we are publishing two separate articles to cover them.

The offer discussed in this article is slightly different to the usual Virgin Atlantic offer Amex publishes (the other offer launched today) in that the spending target and the statement credit are both lower and the offer is only valid on spending made through Amex Travel.

Quick thoughts

As with the other two airline offers we’ve written about today, the main bit of good news is that multiple purchases that when added together exceed the spending target will trigger this offer, so there’s no requirement to spend the whole amount in one transaction.

The bad news is more plentiful.

Firstly, the rebate is only available on trips originating in the United States and fares paid in USD, so that rules out any cheap premium cabin fares originating in Europe.

Secondly, the offer must be triggered by the end of November rather than the end of December (as is the case for the other Virgin Atlantic offer launched today) so targeted cardholders have less than two months in which to plan a trip that will trigger the statement credit.

Thirdly, this offer is only valid on bookings made through Amex Travel and not on bookings made directly with the airline, and that may prove to be frustrating if there are any issues with the booking or if any changes need to be made (it’s always better dealing directly with airline rather than dealing with an intermediary).

Keep in mind that you don’t actually have to fly by 30 November 2024 to trigger this offer, you just have to have paid for your fare(s) by then, so this deal should cover flights into September/October 2025 (I guess, that’s also a bit good news).

If you’re considering a premium cabin booking, keep in mind that while it used to be hard to recommend Virgin Atlantic thanks to its appalling horse box style Business Class seats, some of the aircraft that it now operates now feature considerably newer business class seats and a new Premium Economy seat and these are the aircraft you should aim to book if possible.

Targeted cards

We have this offer targeted to the Platinum Card® from American Express (which offers us 5 points/dollar on up to $500,000 of spending made directly with airlines or on flights booked through Amex Travel and 1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply) and to the Business Platinum Card® from American Express (which earns us 5 points/dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel), but we don’t see the offer on any of our other cards.

For anyone who doesn’t have a Platinum Card of some sort, the next best card to see this targeted to would probably be the American Express® Green Card which offers 3 points/dollar on most travel purchases (terms apply), but as it looks like this may be an offer restricted to consumer and business Platinum Cards, that may not be an option that’s open to you (let us know in the comments if it is).

Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The American Express® Green Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom line

Today has seen Amex launch a new variation of its targeted Virgin Atlantic offer in which it has reduced its spending requirement to $1,200, reduced the statement credit that’s available to $200, and restricted the deal to bookings made through Amex Travel.

For some, this may be the better of the two Virgin Atlantic offers launched today as the spending requirement is relatively low, but for anyone booking a premium cabin fare (i.e. an expensive fare), the more traditional Amex Virgin Atlantic offer discussed earlier may be the better deal.
