Quick thoughts

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the very best deals are only available today. What this means is that there’s going to be an incredible amount of competition for what is almost certain to be a limited number of awards os if you find flights that work for you, I strongly suggest that you book as soon as possible.

Personally, I would start by searching for awards to Australia where the sun will be out and the weather will be great but at this pricing (from 30,000 miles round-trip), I would probably book any destination that interested me regardless of the weather/season.

Bottom line

United Airlines elites and co-branded cardholders can save up to 50% off select Economy Class awards that are booked today and up to 30% off select Economy Class awards that are booked after today but by 2 December. Mathematically, this is a fantastic deal, but it will only be a fantastic deal in reality if a significant number of people can actually find awards that they can book.

  1. Took me multiple attempts but was able to get my desired trip: EWR-SYD, round-trip Feb 19 return Mar 1, for only 48,000 miles! (plus $111 taxes/fees). And all on 777s (not a fan of UA 787 coach seats). Cash fare was showing around $2300 for the trip, so this is a great redemption of my UA miles.
