American Express is targeting cardholders with a new offer for bonus points on spending with National Car rental made through the end of the year (this is the second rental car offer we’ve seen Amex publish today). The offer applies to reservations made at locations within the United States (and US Territories) and requires that reservations are made at least 24 hours in advance.

Quick Thoughts

As usual (for a lot of these types of offers), only bookings within the US and US Territories will trigger the rebate so don’t make the mistake of thinking that a rental in Mexico or anywhere in the Caribbean will work just as well.

Also, be aware that the terms and conditions indicate that the $250 of spending required to trigger the bonus points does not have to be made in a single transaction (“spend a minimum of $250 in one or more purchases”), so anyone needing to make a few cheap reservations isn’t excluded from this offer.

Naturally, everyone should be loading this offer on the credit card that offers them the best combination of rental car cover and points earnings (for most this will probably be the American Express® Green Card) but that may not always be an option.

I can see this targeted offer on all our Membership Rewards cards (consumer and business) and while none of them gives us a great return on rental car spending, the 5,000 bonus points are worth having (we value them at $75) so that may tempt me in to using the Platinum Card® from American Express rather than the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card on our next rental.

Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card and the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. Neither the American Express® Green Card or the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card are currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom Line

Any Amex cardholders who need to book a rental car before the end of December should check to see if they’ve been targeted to earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points following $250 of spending with National Car Rental.

Keep in mind that by choosing to use your targeted Amex card in place of one of one of your other cards you may be forgoing one or more useful benefits that the other card offers (e.g. primary rental insurance), so make sure that any bonus points you plan to earn will outweigh anything that you’re giving up to earn those points.
