IHG, Hilton, and Marriott are all running global promotions for the upcoming months, so out of the major miles & points hotel chains, Hyatt has been the only one that up until now, hasn’t thrown its customers a bone.

Well, a bone (of sorts) has now been thrown, but Hyatt fans hoping for a Bonus Journeys promotion that’s valid worldwide are in for a bit of a disappointment.

The promotion

Earn double points, up to 20,000 bonus points, starting with your second qualifying stay at over 320 participating hotels in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific when you complete qualifying stays between 7 October and 20 December 2024.

Registration is required.

Key terms

  • You must register for the promotion between September 24 01:00 GMT+8 and November 4, 2024, 23:59 GMT to participate.
  • Only eligible stays that begin after registration and are completed between October 7, 2024 and December 20, 2024 will count towards this promotion.
  • All eligible stays must be completed by December 20, 2024 in order for them to count in this promotion.
  • Beginning on your second eligible stay after registration and during the promotion period, you will receive double points per eligible stay at participating Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific excluding Greater China.
  • Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not participating in this promotion.
  • Your first eligible stay must be completed at a participating property.
  • A maximum of 20,000 Bonus Points may be earned under this promotion.
  • All points awarded under this promotion are Bonus Points.
  • You will receive five (5) Bonus Points per dollar of eligible spend on your eligible stay. This is in addition to the five (5) base points you would earn as your base earning.
  • If a member chooses to earn bonus miles, the bonus will be awarded in World of Hyatt bonus points.
  • For the purpose of this promotion, an “eligible stay” is defined as any stay where a member is paying an eligible rate or redeems a Free Night Award.
  • For purposes of this promotion, consecutive nights at the same hotel constitute one stay (even if you check out and check back in).
  • Only the room occupied by the member will count toward this promotion.

Full terms and conditions (which you should read carefully) can be found on the registration page.

Quick thoughts

Well, this is dull.

I thought we had finally got over the period in which the big chains excluded a guest’s first stay from their promotions, but here we are looking at a new Hyatt promotion that does exactly that. That’s annoying.

Essentially, what we have here is a promotion that excludes the first stay, that excludes all Hyatt properties in the Americas (North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean), and that caps earnings at 20,000 bonus points.

Not really a promotion to drive new business is it?

With Hyatt awarding 5 base points on stays made outside of promotion periods, the total earnings on offer at participating properties during the promotion is 10 points/dollar, but the 20,000 points cap means that you’ll only earn that rebate on the first $4,000 of eligible spending.

We value Hyatt points at 1.4 cents each so, effectively, the promotion is offering us a bonus rebate of 7% with the rebate capped at $280.

That’s better than nothing, but not by much.

I guess we’re going to have to hope that Hyatt comes up with a different promotion for stays at properties in the Americas, but given how weak this promotion is, it would seem that Hyatt is not having much trouble filling the rooms it wants to fill, so it’s far from certain that any more promotions will appear before next year.

Tip: If you have an expensive stay coming up and it happens to be your first stay in the promotion period, consider splitting it into 2 back-to-back stays with the first stay being a 1-night stay at a ‘cheap’ property and the second stay being the longer and at a property you actually want to stay at. Whether the inconvenience of doing this is worth you while will depend on your circumstances and on how many points you’ll earn.

Bottom line

Hyatt has announced a new double points promotion for stays in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific that are taken between 7 October and 20 December 2024. Annoyingly, a guest’s first stay during the promotion period won’t be eligible to earn double points and the total bonus on offer is capped at just 20,000 points, but you may as well register anyway just to make sure you don’t leave any points on the table.
