Global Entry is the US CBP program that is open to US citizens, legal residents of the US, and citizens of select nations around the world. The program gives members expedited entry into the United States via kiosks stationed at major points of entry and removes the need for passengers to stand in seemingly endless immigration lines as they wait to enter the country.

Check here to see if you’re eligible for Global Entry

Global Entry + TSA PreCheck

Travelers who qualify for the Global Entry program are automatically enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program which offers expedited screening at domestic US TSA checkpoints.

Passengers using the TSA PreCheck lanes don’t need to remove laptops or toiletries from their bags as they pass through airport security, nor do they need to remove shoes, belts, or lightweight jackets as they pass through the body scanners – Global Entry and TSA PreCheck can be godsends if you’re a frequent flyer.

The costs

5-year membership of the Global Entry program currently costs $100 and a standalone TSA PreCheck membership costs from $78 for new applicants and from $70 to renew.

If, however, if you have the right credit card in your wallet, you can get the cost of Global Entry (or standalone TSA PreCheck) refunded as part of the benefits that your card comes with.

Bottom line

This is not an exhaustive list of all the credit cards that offer a rebate of the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck fees, but it represents most of the mainstream credit cards that come with this benefit.

If you travel in/out the United States with any kind of frequency, Global Entry will enhance your trips by more than you may imagine – I frequently sail through immigration in a matter of minutes while I see others in lines that seem to snake all the way out of the immigration hall (Miami can be particularly terrible for this).

Likewise, TSA PreCheck can be a good time saver at airports, and it’s nice not to have to unpack laptops, tablets, and toiletries when passing through TSA checkpoints (especially as devices can go missing!).

Personally, I think that the extra $15 that it costs to get Global Entry (as well as TSA PreCheck) is money well spent, but if you’d rather not go through the longer process that Global Entry requires, perhaps just a TSA PreCheck application will be enough.
