British Airways has launched a sale on flights and holidays for travel deep into 2022. With the US ban on travelers originating in the UK, Ireland, and the Schengen Area expected to be lifted next month, there’s a strong focus on the United States in this sale but other popular destinations are included too.

The sale runs from 14 October to 27 October and British Airways is offering return flights to Tampa from £294, return flights to New York from £320, return flights to Boston and Orlando from £330 and return flights to Miami and Los Angeles from £340, but as most people reading this blog are probably interested in the long-haul premium cabin deals, that’s what this post will focus on.

Long Haul First Class Deals

I’ve used the British Airways Low Fare Finder Tool to see what kind of First Class deals are being offered and I can’t say that I’ve found anything that’s going to get people excited. Boston for £1,888 return, New York for £1,988 return, Singapore for £2,499 return, and Hong Kong for £2,588 return may interest some readers, but I wouldn’t call these prices “great deals”.

Long-Haul Business Class Deals

Unlike with the First Class fares, there are a lot more deals to be found in Business Class but it has to be stressed that we saw cheaper fares on offer before the pandemic.

Best North America Business Class Deals

  • Austin – from £1,594
  • Boston – from £1,473
  • Chicago – from £1,5894
  • Denver – from £1,1451
  • Los Angeles – from £1,752
  • Miami – from £1,609
  • Montreal – from £1,281
  • Nashville – from £1,611
  • New York – from £1,484
  • Philadelphia – from £1,583
  • San Diego – from £1,794
  • San Francisco – from £1,752
  • Seattle – from £1,594
  • Toronto – from £1,251
  • Vancouver – £1,694
  • Washington D.C. – from £1,599

On average, it looks like a lot of these fears are £150 – £250 higher than the fares I remember seeing in the British Airways 2019 winter sale. Still, if you need to travel now the sale prices from 2019 probably aren’t of much interest to you but they can still be a good point of reference to help you evaluate just how good or bad a sale this is.

Best Caribbean Business Class Deals

  • Antigua – from £1,611
  • Bridgetown (Barbados) – from £1,786
  • Cancun – from £1,701
  • Grenada – from £1,729
  • Kingston – £1,321
  • Montego Bay – £1,624
  • Providenciales – from £1,798
  • Punta Cana – from £1,406
  • San Jose (Costa Rica) – from £1,396
  • St Lucia – from £1,515

Just like the Business Class fares to North America, these Caribbean deals may offer a good discount on what prices can be like outside of a sale, but they’re still higher (sometimes, considerably higher) than deals that we’ve seen BA offer in the past.

If you’d like to travel now the discounts will be helpful, but I’m not seeing much here that will encourage a whole raft of new bookings from people who know what they’re looking at.

The Best Of The Rest

  • Dubai – from £1,490
  • Hong Kong – from £1,788
  • Islamabad – from £1,658
  • Mumbai – from £1,694
  • New Delhi – from £1,594
  • Singapore – from £1,799

The Dubai fare is the one that stands out here as it’s set at a price that’s close to what sale fares to Dubai usually look like but I can’t say that the rest look particularly tempting.

Short-Haul Sweet Spots For Tier Points

Because British Airways awards Tier Points based on the distance of a flight, there are a number of the airline’s longer short-haul routes that award considerably more Tier Points than all of the others – while a London to Belgrade roundtrip (1,060 miles each way) will only earn an Executive Club member 80 Tier Points, the slightly longer London to Sofia roundtrip (1,271 miles each way) will earn a member 160 Tier Points – and these are routes on which prices should be keenly watched by anyone wanting to load up on some “cheap” Tier Points.

Right now, the British Airways sale is offering a few very good Business Class deals on a range of routes that will all earn Executive Club members 80 Tier Points one-way or 160 Tier Points for a single round trip.

Here’s a selection of the best one-way fares that I’ve found:

  • Bucharest – from £129
  • Budapest – from £112
  • Catania – from £125
  • Funchal – from £139
  • Istanbul – from £136
  • Preveza Lefkada – from £144
  • Reykjavik – from £140
  • Sofia – from £105

All of these offer pretty good value but the standout fares here are the deals to Budapest and Sofia where Tier Points start at just £1.31 each.

Bottom Line

British Airways has launched a sale that will run through 27 October and which includes savings on long-haul and short-haul flights to most parts of the world as well as savings on packages booked through British Airways Holidays.

Overall, I’m a little disappointed with what BA has published as although there are some great Business Class fares on a few popular short-haul routes which earn a lot of tier points, most of the long-haul fares that I’m seeing are noticeably more expensive than the better deals that British Airways was publishing before the pandemic (I guess the airline needs to recoup dome of its losses!).

If you absolutely have to book now, some of these fares may offer you a good saving but if you are happy to hold off for now, I would wait to see what kind of deals appear around Black Friday/Cyber Monday – there’s a chance that we’ll see better fares offered then…but there are no guarantees!
