This morning, American Express has launched a new targeted offer which gives select cardholders the opportunity to earn 17,500 Membership Rewards points when booking through ITA Airways in the next ~11 weeks. If you value Amex points at a similar price point to us, that represents a potentially excellent rebate.

Quick thoughts

A bit of good news is that multiple purchases totaling $1,000 or more will trigger this offer so you don’t have to spend the whole amount in one transaction.

Keep in mind that you don’t actually have to fly by 30 November 2024 to trigger this offer, you just have to have paid for your fare(s) by then – so this deal should cover flights into October 2025, so that’s a bit more good news.

We value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each (based on the value we know we can get out of them with relative ease), so that values this offer at an impressive $262.50.

The one bit of disappointing news is the same bit of news that we usually see with Amex offers – the bonus will only be triggered by flights originating in the US, so there’s no scope to use this to book one of the excellent Business Class fares that we often ITA publishing for travel out of Europe.

Targeted cards

We’re seeing this offer targeted to all our consumer Membership Rewards cards but not our business cards, but as this means that we have it targeted to the Platinum Card® from American Express (which earns 5 points/dollar on up to $500,000 of spending made directly with airlines or on flights booked through Amex Travel and1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), we’re not too disappointed.

For us, that’s a further effective rebate of 7.5%.

For anyone who doesn’t have the Amex Platinum Card, the next best card on which to see this targeted offer would probably be the American Express® Green Card which offers 3 points/dollar on most travel purchases (terms apply).

With this offer apparently not being targeted at business cards, the opportunity to use the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express to earn the 2 points/dollar that it offers on up to $50,000 of spending every year (1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), probably won’t be there.

Keep in mind that although we can’t see this offer on any of our non-Membership Rewards cards, there’s a chance that Amex is running a parallel offer in which it’s offering a $175 rebate on $1,000 of spending with ITA Airways, so if cash back is better for you than points, make sure you check all of your cards carefully before loading the offer.

Bottom Line

If you’re considering booking a transatlantic trip in the next couple of months (for travel as far into the future as October 2025), log into your Amex account and check to see if you have been targeted for an offer that would earn you 17,500 bonus Amex points on just $1,000 of spending with ITA Airways.
