It was only a little over a month ago that American debuted it’s “Provisions by Admirals Club” lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and now the airline is back with more plans to keep its Charlotte flyers happy – a new Flagship Lounge is on the way.
In typical American Airlines style, we haven’t been given a timeline for the opening of the Charlotte Flagship Lounge or any details about what we can expect – “[a]dditional construction details and timing will be shared at a later date” – is all that the airline has offered up when it comes to a timeline, but it is promising that “Customers traveling through CLT can expect the same level of luxury in the new Flagship lounge” as are being showcased at the Flagship Lounge which recently opened in Philadelphia.
Apparently, guests can expect …
- “Comfortable seating”
- A bar and dining facilities
- “Spa-style shower suites”
- “Workstations and/or kid-friendly family room”
So, basically, just the things you’d expect out of a lounge.
The two quotes that American Airlines has supplied today are these.
Heather Garboden, American Airlines Chief Customer Officer:
“As an airline, we’re committed to meeting the needs of our customers, and we’re excited to continue to invest in our lounges at CLT. These improvements will introduce a premium experience for our Flagship® customers and provide more space in our Admirals Club lounges.”
Ralph Lopez, American Airlines Senior Vice President of CLT Operations:
“Charlotte is incredibly important to American’s network. We serve millions of customers as they travel through CLT, and we’re excited to continue to elevate their experience when traveling with us.”
Not much of substance there either, so we really don’t have much to go on until American shares more details … whenever that may be.

Bottom line
To go alongside its two Admirals Clubs and one “Provisions by Admirals Club” lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, American Airlines now plans to add a Flagship Lounge as well.
At the time of writing, no details have been provided regarding a construction timeline, what the lounge will look like, where (exactly) the lounge will be located, or how big the lounge will be, but I’ll be sure to update this article as and when American Airlines decides to put out a more useful press release.
According to other BA bloggers, American will be closing one of their current AAdmirals Clubs to make room for this one. That seems like an impressively boneheaded move even for post-merger AA management. Charlotte is desperately in need of more AA clubs and American is the only airline with the power to get CLT to make room for those clubs. American keeps doing this one-step-forward two-steps-back thing and it’s maddening.
