Hyatt has issued a new update on its plans for luxury hotel openings in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and although a number of the properties included in the update have been mentioned (at one point or another) in the past, the fact that the pandemic caused so much havoc with some of these plans means that it’s good to see where things now stand.
Hyatt still expects to expand its luxury portfolio across Europe, the Middle East and Africa by over 30% by the end of 2025 and in real world terms, that means that it expects to open 13 high-end properties in the EMEA region in the coming three years.
The properties that are on their way include additions to the Park Hyatt, Andaz, Grand Hyatt, Unbound Collection, Miraval and Thompson brands and will see World of Hyatt members getting new locations at which to earn and burn points in countries such as Spain, South Africa, the UK, Austria and Finland.
Here are the openings that Hyatt has told us that we should expect:
Expected in 2023
Park Hyatt Johannesburg (Johannesburg, South Africa)
Hyatt tells us that the iconic Winston Hotel in Rosebanck is expected to reopen as the Park Hyatt Johannesburg in “early 2023” following “extensive renovations” but as the Winston is still accepting reservations through February 2023 and as extensive renovations aren’t usually completed in a matter of weeks, the suggestion that we’ll see a Park Hyatt in Johannesburg in early 2023 seems a little optimistic.
Park Hyatt Marrakech (Marrakech, Morocco)
The Park Hyatt Marrakech will be the first Park Hyatt hotel in Morocco and is expected to open in “early 2023” (link to the property’s website). It will offer 181 rooms set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains and will feature a Moroccan garden-inspired 18-hole golf course, designed by award-winning golf course designer, Kyle Phillips.
Andaz Doha (Doha, Qatar)
The Andaz Doha is a Category 3 property (costing 9,000/12,000/15,000 points per night) that is currently accepting bookings for stays commencing on 1 January 2023.
The property is located in the center of Doha’s West Bay, and will offer 256 rooms with 32 suites and four Royal suites, 56 residences, a signature restaurant, a Singaporean street food restaurant, a jungle-themed bar, an outdoor pool, a fully equipped fitness studio, and more.
Grand Hansa Hotel Helsinki (Helsinki, Finland)
This is a property that Hyatt first mentioned almost exactly two years ago and which is now scheduled to open its doors in “mid-2023”.
The Grand Hansa Hotel Helsinki will join The Unbound Collection by Hyatt portfolio as the first Hyatt-branded hotel in Finland and will be located on what Hyatt describes as “of the city’s most famous streets”.
The property will offer 219 rooms and five suites, three dining options including a two-story bar, and a day spa with three different saunas and a lounge area.
“Hotel in development” (Crans-Montana, Switzerland)
In its latest update, Hyatt simply refers to this property as “hotel in development” but back in 2021 when it was first mentioned, it had a name – Rhodania Hotel.
This is an existing 41-room property located on the third tee of a famous Severiano Ballesteros golf course, approximately 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level in one of the most prestigious and well-established year-round mountain destinations in Switzerland.
Hyatt tells us to expect this property to open its doors in “mid-2023” so it’s likely that renovations are ongoing and it’s possible that a name change is on the way.
Expected in 2024
Park Hyatt London River Thames (Nine Elms, London)
This is a property that was originally slated to open this year, but that now isn’t expected to welcome guests until “early 2024”.
The property will be located in the Nine Elms area of London (south of the river and in the vicinity of the US embassy) and its 203 guest rooms and suites will take up the first 18 floors of a 43-floor “River Tower” building with the remaining 25 floors taken up by 109 residential apartments.
Andaz Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal)
The Ansaz Lisbon is now expected to open “in 2024” (when first announced it was expected to welcome guests in 2023) and will be located in the center of Lisbon’s Baixa district.
Hyatt hasn’t mentioned how many rooms and suites the new Andaz will have but we know that guests will be able to enjoy cocktails and local dishes at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, its bar, or Andaz Lounge, and that the property will offer a spa and fitness center.
Grand Hyatt The Red Sea (Shura Island, Saudi Arabia)
The Grand Htatt The Red Sea is a property that I haven’t seen Hyatt mention before, but we’re now told that it is expected to offer 430 rooms on Shaura Islando n Saudi Arabia’s west coast…
… and that it is expected to open in mid-2024.
This luxury resort hotel will represent the largest of 11 hotels set to open on the island and will be the second Grand Hyatt hotel in Saudi Arabia and the seventh Grand Hyatt hotel in the Middle East.
Thompson Vienna (Vienna, Austria)
The Thompson Vienna is another property that I don’t recall Hyatt mentioning before and is a property about which we have very little information.
We know that it’s expected to open in “late 2024” and that will be located within a “landmark development” that’s bringing a new KaDeWe high-end department store tp Vienna but that’s about it. No information about the number of rooms or the amenities we can expect to find on site has been provided.
Expected in 2025
Park Hyatt Riyadh Diriyah Gate (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia)
Expected to open in 2025, Park Hyatt Riyadh Diriyah Gate in Saudi Arabia will overlook Al-Turaif’s UNESCO world heritage site when over 2.5 square miles (7 square kilometers) of Diriyah will be transformed into one big tourism destination.
Grand Hyatt Limassol (Limassol, Cyprus)
Cyprus is a fantastic island to visit so it’s great to see that Hyatt is finally getting a foothold there.
Back in 2021, the 300-room Grand Hyatt Limassol was mentioned as a property expected to open by the end 2023 but progress on the development has obviously been considerably slower than expected as it’s now not expected to open until some time in 2025.
Details about this property are still very thin on the ground to all we really know is that it’s new-build resort that will occupy a prime beachfront location a little east of Limassol.
Grand Hyatt Lanzarote (Lanzarote, Spain)
Expected to open in 2025, Grand Hyatt Lanzarote will be located in what Hyatt calls “the premium tourist region” on the island of Lanzarote and will provide “stunning coastal views”.
No further details have been made available.
Miraval The Red Sea (Shura Island, Saudi Arabia)
This is the second (of two) Hyatt properties set to open on Saudi Arabia’s Shura Island and is expected to offer 180 rooms that will start to accept guests from “late 2025”.
Quick thoughts
Most of these properties appear to be exciting new additions to the Hyatt portfolio and, more importantly, to the World of Hyatt program.
Sure, I’d rather be kicked in the head by a camel before being set upon by hyenas rather than visit Saudi Arabia, but that minor issue aside, I can’t wait to try some of these places out.
The Park Hyatt Marrakech probably tops the list of properties taken from this list that I’d most like to visit, but the Andaz Lisbon, the Grand Hyatt Limassol, the Park Hyatt London and the Thompson Vienna are all properties that I immediately knew that I wanted to visit as I worked my way through Hyatt’s press release, and that’s always a good sign.
An important thing to keep in mind is that the opening dates for most of these properties have already changed at least once (most have changed more than once) so there’s no guarantee that Hyatt’s current expectations are realistic.
Yes, given that it’s already taking bookings for 1 January, the Andaz Doha is almost certainly going to open in “early 2023” as Hyatt expects, but all the other properties could yet face issues that mean that their expected opening dates (years) get pushed back so no one should be making any plans to visit just yet.
Bottom line
Hyatt has provided us with an update on the progress that is being made with 13 new luxury properties that it expects to bring into its portfolio. At the time of writing, we’re told to expect 5 new luxury additions next year, 4 new additions in 2024 and 4 new additions in 2025 but as is always the case with hotel openings, all that could change in the coming months.
