Quick thoughts
As usual with these kinds of Hertz offer, only bookings within the US will trigger the rebate, so don’t make the mistake of thinking that a rental in Mexico or anywhere in the Caribbean will get you the rebate. Also, be aware that the terms and conditions indicate that the $500 of spending required to trigger the rebate doesn’t need to be made in a single rental (“spend a minimum of $500 in one or more qualifying purchases”).
Usually, everyone should be loading this offer on the credit card that offers them the best combination of rental car cover and points earnings, but as this offer is only targeted to Platinum Cards, earning lots of points alongside the rebate isn’t really an option.
If you don’t have the option of primary rental car insurance on your Platinum Card, you will need to decide if you would prefer to forgo the saving on your next rental and use a card which would give you primary rental car cover and good points earning (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card), or if you are prepared to use your own insurance (should anything go wrong) and take the savings from the Amex offer that the Platinum Cards would give you (terms apply).
Personally, I would probably look to trigger this offer only if I was renting for a short period of time. For a rental of any notable length, the insurance cover (and the peace of mind) that the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card gives would probably be more important to me than the saving from the Amex offer.
Bottom Line
Holders of Amex Platinum Cards who need to book and pay for a rental car before 31 October should check to see if they’ve been targeted to save $100 on $500 of spending with Hertz.
Before booking, however, cardholders should also consider if the saving being offered and the benefits that come with the Amex card that they plan to use outweigh the earnings and insurance cover offered by any of the other cards that they hold.
OMG NO! Hertz with their new AI damage scan is committing extortion against its renters.
Exactly. The way to save money at Hertz is to spend it elsewhere. No just the AI scam, but Hertz having customers arrested due to its inability to correctly process rentals, and also charging a customer who rented a Tesla for failing to fill the gas tank.
