Amex has brought back an offer that we last saw back in February (it expired at the end of May) and which gives targeted Amex cardholders the opportunity to save on their next stay at select Mandarin Oriental properties around the world.

Thoughts

Mandarin Oriental has 40 properties worldwide and only 15 are participating in this promotion, so that’s not exactly a broad selection from which to choose. The fact that the properties in, Bangkok, Barcelona, Prague, Taipei, Istanbul, Lake Como, and Milan are not participating is a little disappointing, but at least a stay at the new property in London (Mayfair) will trigger the offer.

Considering the cost of a night at a Mandarin Oriental property can often exceed $500 (and by quite a bit!), this should be a pretty easy offer to use for anyone looking to stay in one of the participating locations before the middle of October.

This looks to be a broadly targeted offer as I can see it on all my Membership Rewards cards (including business cards) and I’ve chosen to load this card to the Platinum Card® from American Express.

This is because even though I’m also seeing the offer on the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express which earns me 2 points/dollar on up to $50,000 of eligible spending per year (1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), the Platinum Card® from American Express doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees while the business card does, and I’d rather cut my earning rate to 1 point/dollar (terms apply) than pay fees that I should be avoiding.

Others, however, may be able to do better – if you’ve been targeted for this offer on your American Express® Green Card, for example, you can earn 3 points/dollar on most travel spending and that includes stays at hotels around the globe (terms apply).

Bottom line

Amex has brought back a targeted offer in which travelers can earn a rebate of $100 on stays made at select Mandarin Oriental properties through the middle of October 2024. If you’ve been targeted for this offer (I suspect most cardholders will see this in their accounts), make sure you save it to the card that will earn you the most points for your stay.
