Quick thoughts
There are a few things to unpack here.
Firstly, the saving on offer can vary significantly from property to property (we’ve seen savings of 10%, 15% and 20% in the few searches that we’ve performed).
Secondly, the discount on offer appears to be based on the ‘standard rate’ and not the cheapest rate that the property is offering so for anyone who usually books non-flexible rates (the cheapest rates), the savings will be lower than for someone who would, ordinarily, only ever book a flexible rate.
Thirdly, even though the discount is based on the standard rate (a flexible rate), the regular sale rate requires full prepayment and in non-refundable.
Having said all of that, life will be different for you if you’re a World of Hyatt member because World of Hyatt members appear to be given two added bonuses:
- Better rates
- Flexibility with their booking at some resorts.
Here, for example, is a result from a random search at the Andaz Maui.
As you can see, the sale rate is ~20% lower than the standard rate (it’s actually 18.8% lower) and the full $683 + taxes must be prepaid and is not refundable.
As you should also be able to see, the rate for World of Hyatt members is a little lower. In this example, it’s not significantly lower, but it’s lower.
More importantly, as the screenshot below shows, the rate for World of Hyatt members doesn’t require prepayment and is, to a degree, flexible.
Sure, a 21 day cancellation policy is a little ridiculous, but it’s better than a rate which doesn’t allow for refunds at all (be aware that not all properties will give you flexibility with the ‘members save more’ rate).
It’s also worth noting that while in the example above the difference in price between the member rate and the non-member care was insignificant, that’s not always going to be the case.
Here, for example, is the result of a random seats at the Alila Encinitas.
In this example, you’d have to be nuts to book the sale rate as not only is there a considerably cheaper advance purchase rate ($869 v $938), but the more flexible ‘members save more’ rate is also noticeably cheaper ($894 v $938).
Note: As a reminder to anyone who’s new to the world of travel (welcome!), the World of Hyatt doesn’t cost anything to join, so there’s absolutely no reason to ever pay more than a World of Hyatt member pays.
We haven’t had a chance to do an extensive dive into what the sale rates look like, and as we weren’t searching for Hyatt resorts in the days leading up to this sale announcement, we don’t know how the pre-sale rates compare to the sale rates, but taken at face value, some of the savings look to be worth exploring further.
A lot of the ‘big name’ resorts appear to be participating – Alila Ventana Big Sur, Andaz Maui, Alila Napa Valley, The Chatwal Lodge, Park Hyatt St Kitts, Alila Encinitas, Andaz Costa Rica, etc… – but be prepared for some of these properties to only have availability on a limited number of dates and for the discounts on offer to be well under 20%.
Finally, we can’t write an article about a hotel sale without a warning about resort fees.
A significant number of the 75 properties participating in this sale will charge you a wholly unjustifiable resort fee* (because they can), and you won’t see the effect of this resort fee until you price up your stay in full (it won’t be included in the nightly rate that you will see initially).
Make sure you keep an eye out for these and make sure you factor them into your calculations when deciding what property to book.
*Hyatt Globalist members have resort fees waived on all stays.
Bottom line
For the next few weeks, Hyatt is running a resort sale in which its offering guests up to 20% off the standard rate a property charges, so if you’re considering a resort booking in the US, the Caribbean or in Latin America, it may be worth your while seeing what Hyatt has to offer.
Keep in mind that World of Hyatt members will get a better deal, and make sure you check and compare the cancellation policies that each of the room rates offers – some will offer a lot more flexibility than others.
