Rakuten is a portal I write about reasonably frequently because it offers miles & points fans a very easy way to collect bonus American Express Membership Rewards points when they shop at a large variety of well-known online retailers. Right now, and for a limited time, Rakuten is offering new members a very easy path to 3,000 bonus Membership Rewards points.

The Promotion

Essentially, the promotion can be summed up in one sentence: Join Rakuten (link), spend $25 through the portal within 90 days of joining, and earn 3,000 bonus Membership Rewards points.

Quick Thoughts

These are points that will be earned in addition to the regular points that are on offer for shopping through the Rakuten portal (1% cash back = 1 Membership Rewards Point) so, even if you somehow manage to find a retailer that is only offering 1% cash back (most offer a lot more), a $25 purchase will net you at least 3,025 points.

I value Membership Rewards Points at 1.5 cents each so 3,025 points would represent an effective rebate of a little over $45. That’s not bad for a $25 outlay!

Bottom Line

Rakuten has said that this promotion will run for “a limited time” but it hasn’t gone as far as to give us an end date so I wouldn’t wait too long to join if this is an offer that interests you. A good miles & points strategy should always include the use of various shopping portals to help you top up your various accounts and Rakuten is definitely a site you should be using if you’re a fan of Membership Rewards.

  1. When I “join”, am I supposed to see anything when I sign up? I didn’t see anything when I did.

    • I’ve been a member for a while so I cannot replicate what a new joiner sees but if you followed the link in the blog post you should have been taken to a page showing the offer. As long as you signed up as a Membership Rewards earning member and not a cash bak earning member I wouldn’t expect you to have any issues.

  2. And a follow up… when I make my purchase, do I need to use an AMEX to get the rebate points or can it be any card?
    Thanks

    • Good question. No, you don’t have to use an Amex card at check out. Use whatever card works best for you.
