Back in the 1990s, Qantas would offer ‘Mystery Flights’ on a frequent basis. A customer would turn up at one of the airline’s main hubs and would be allocated a random seat on a flight to any of the airline’s domestic destinations where they would spend the day before flying home in the evening.

Now, with Australia’s borders still firmly closed and with international travel looking unlikely before the latter half of this year, Qantas is bringing back its ‘Mystery Flight’ concept in a limited (and slightly tweaked) way, as the airline looks to promote domestic tourism.

Qantas’ Mystery Flights (2021 Edition)

Starting from 27 March, Qantas will offer customers three mystery flights out of three Australian cities using its 737 aircraft. The original concept has been enhanced so that it now offers a little more than just a day-return flight to a destination unknown. With these mystery flights, Qantas will also offer customers a day full of activities at their destination.

The three flights will depart from Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney and all three mystery destinations will be within a two-hour flight radius so that passengers don’t simply spend the whole day on a narrowbody aircraft. Also, in an effort to create a “unique onboard experience”, Qantas has confirmed that all three flights will include low-level scenic flybys of key Australian landmarks en route to their final destination (weather conditions and air traffic control permitting).

Finally, to ensure that no one is caught out by the weather, conditions, or the activities offered at the three destinations, Qantas has provided a few clues as to what the mystery destinations will offer.

The fares for the mystery flights, which include meals and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages as well as activities at the final destination, are AU$737 (US$577) for Economy Class and AU$1,579 (US$1,238) for Business Class. Economy Class bookings will earn 2,400 Qantas Points and 40 Status Credits while the Business Class fares will earn 5000 Qantas Points and 80 Status Credits.
