Marriott is getting on a roll with new additions to its Autograph Collection of hotels. In May we had the announcement that The Press Hotel in Seattle was joining the collection, in June “The Hotel” in Lucerne, Switzerland came onboard and now, in July, Marriott has announced the addition of Gewandhaus, Dresden to the portfolio.

Gewandhaus Dresden

Once called the Radisson Gewandhaus, the hotel is described as a “charming baroque property” and has only just recently (April 2015) emerged from extensive renovations.

The building that houses the hotel dates back to 1768 and has clearly responded well to some TLC:

Gewandhaus DresdenIn contrast to the historic feel of the building the hotel’s has been furnished with more contemporary furniture but brass lamps and leather sofas hint at the hotel’s past.

Guest rooms come in three main types; Standard, Superior and Junior Suite:

  • The “Standard” rooms are 183-226 sq ft (17-21 sq m) in area – so not particularly large – and come with a Queen bed.
  • The “Superior” rooms are considerably larger at 312-344 sq ft (29-32 sq m) in area and come with a King bed or 2 Twin/Single beds.
  • The Junior Suites are 484-560 sq ft in size (45-52 sq m) and come with a separate living area that’s divided from the bedroom by a ‘privacy wall’.

There’s only a single restaurant at the hotel which also houses the bar. The Meatery Bar & Restaurant specialises in steaks, burgers and fresh fish but is also where you’ll find a buffet breakfast priced at 22 Euro or $24 (approximately).

The TripAdvisor ratings for the hotel look pretty good but it’s hard to tell how much stock to put in them when the hotel has just gone through such a big change.

There are hardly any post-renovation reviews but, if the hotel is as popular after its make-over as it appears to have been before it, then it will be a very nice new addition to the Marriott portfolio.

Dresden isn’t exactly on the main tourist thoroughfare through Europe (despite being a very historic city) and that appears to be represented in the nightly rates:

Checking a few random dates on Marriott.com this is what I found:

  • August midweek – Rates in the region of 92 Euro/night ($102/night)
  • August weekend – Rates in the region of 92 Euro/night ($102/night)
  • October midweek – Rates in the region of 116 Euro/night ($128/night)
  • October weekend – Rates in the region of 132 Euro/night ($146/night)
  • February midweek – Rates in the region of 92 Euro/night ($102/night)
  • February weekend – Rates in the region of 92 Euro/night ($102/night)
  • May midweek – Rates in the region of 116 Euro/night ($128/night)
  • May weekend – Rates in the region of 116 Euro/night ($128/night)

Considering the hotel is described as a “5-star boutique hotel” and has entered the Marriott Rewards scale at Category 6 those are very attractive rates.

Category 6 hotels require 30,000 Marriott Reward Points for a free night but, at those rates, you’d be nuts to redeem points at this hotel if you were planning to visit Dresden.

If anyone has visited this hotel in the past (in its old guise) let me know what you thought of it in the comments section below. Do you think it’s worth a visit?
