British Airways announced a Triple Avios promotion last week which, rather than causing unbridled jubilation, seems to have caused a large number of Executive Club members to waste a lot of their time trying to figure out exactly what the promotion is offering. That humble BAEC members have been having trouble agreeing on what the promotion offers is hardly surprising when it would appear that British Airways doesn’t have a clue either.

In an earlier post today I explained why British Airways are giving out incorrect information about their own promotion so now I’m going to show how I think travelers should be working out the Avios they’re going to earn.

Before I start it’s worth reminding you that only Base Avios count towards the Triple Avios total.

How I Think The Promotion Works

The formula to working how the total number of Avios you’ll earn for a trip is as follows:

(Base Avios x 3) + Cabin Bonus + Tier Bonus

Working Out Your Base Avios

To find out your “Base Avios” number you should set the Executive Club Tier in the Avios Calculator to “Blue” – this makes sure the calculator doesn’t include any tier bonus in its calculations.

Then:

For All Economy Fares:

  • Base Avios = the number of Avios the calculator tells you you’ll earn

For E & T Premium Economy Fares:

  • Base Avios = the amount of Avios the calculator tells you you’ll earn

For All Other Fares:

  • Base Avios =  the number of Avios that you would earn if you had booked an E or T Premium Economy fare

Working Out Your Cabin Bonus

Note: Only W Premium Economy and higher fares earn a cabin bonus.

In the Avios calculator keep the “Executive Club Tier” field set to “Blue”

W Fare Premium Economy Cabin Bonus = Avios earned (per the Avios calculator) for a W fare less the Avios earned (per the Avios calculator) for an E or T Premium Economy fare.

R & I Fare Business Class Cabin Bonus = Avios earned for an R or I fare less the Avios earned for an E or T Premium Economy fare.

J, C & D Fare Business Class Cabin Bonus = Avios earned for an J, C or D fare less the Avios earned for an E or T Premium Economy fare.

A Fare First Class Cabin Bonus = Avios earned for an A fare less the Avios earned for an E or T Premium Economy fare.

F Fare First Class Cabin Bonus = Avios earned for an F fare less the Avios earned for an E or T Premium Economy fare.

Working Out Your Tier Bonus

In the Avios calculator set your Executive Club Tier to whatever status you hold.

For all Economy Class Fares and E & T Premium Economy fares:

Tier Bonus = Number of Avios the calculator tells you you’ll earn – Base Avios you worked out earlier.

For all other fares:

Tier Bonus = Number of Avios the calculator tells you you’ll earn – Base Avios – Cabin Bonus

Bottom Line

Based on the terms and conditions of the promotion (not British Airways’ guidance) that is how I think the promotion works and this is how I think you can calculate what you can expect to earn from your trips.

Of course there is another random element to this promotion and that’s the British Airways IT department. They don’t exactly have a stellar history and, if they’re any thing like their colleagues who put this promotion out, who knows how many Avios people will see hitting their accounts!

Anyway….

If anything above is unclear or if anyone is still unsure of how many Avios they’re going to earn, just put your route, fare class and BAEC status into the comments section and I’ll see if I can help.

  1. […] UPDATE 10 September: As I suspected when I first wrote about this, British Airways doesn’t really understand its own promotion – you will only earn Triple Avios on base Avios which means that, if you’re traveling in a premium cabin, the Avios calculator will not tell you how many Avios this promotion will give you – I’ve written a follow up post explaining how I think you should work out how many Avios you … […]
