Quick thoughts
This is a pretty simple offer, but there are still three key things to note here:
- If you want to trigger this offer, make sure you use the expedia.com/amex site for your booking and not the regular site as a purchase on the regular site may not track correctly.
- Make sure you book a prepaid rate (i.e you pay for your stay upfront) otherwise the booking will not trigger the statement credit.
- Make sure you compare the price being displayed on the expedia.com/amex page with expedia.com to make sure that you’re not being overcharged just for using the Amex offer.
Aside from the above, there are a few other things that need to be acknowledged here.
Firstly, if you’re not 100% committed to traveling on the dates you select, this isn’t an offer that will work for you. Only fully prepaid rates will earn the 15% statement credit and those rates don’t have much flexibility, so you can’t simply cancel and rebook if the mood takes you or if your plans change.
Secondly, bookings made through Expedia will be viewed as 3rd party bookings by the hotel and 3rd party bookings are not eligible for any loyalty program earnings or benefits (e.g. if you book a Marriott though Expedia, you won’t earn any Bonvoy Points and any elite status benefits you are usually entitled to probably won’t be offered).
What this means is that you should be careful to make sure that if you use Expedia for your hotel booking, you should make sure that what you’re earning through this offer isn’t offset by what you’re giving up in hotel earnings and benefits.
Thirdly, Expedia’s customer service is legendarily abysmal, so be prepared to get frustrated if you need to call in to deal with an issue/error.
As far as targeted Amex cards go …
This appears to be one of the more narrowly targeted offers that we’ve seen recently as we only have it targeted to a Business Platinum Card® from American Express. None of our consumer Amex cards are seeing this offer and even the ever reliable Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express has been left out, so quite a few cardholders may have been overlooked.
Bottom line
American Express is now targeting select cardholders for a 15% statement credit (capped at $150) when they use their targeted card to prepay for a hotel stay through expedia.com/amex by 19 December 2024.
Based on how few of our Amex cards are showing this offer, this doesn’t appear to be a widely targeted deal, but if you have taken onboard our warnings, still wish to lock in the savings, and need to book a hotel stay, make sure you check your Amex offers to see if you could save some cash.
