We don’t often write about Amex offers that don’t relate to travel or to credit card welcome offers, but an offer that dropped into my account today (or possibly Friday) looks so useable that I thought it was worth flagging.

If you have an Amex Membership Rewards card, you may have been targeted to earn up to 20,000 Amex points on spending with Samsung.

Thoughts

5 point points per dollar with a cap of 20,000 bonus points means that a targeted cardholder will earn bonus points on up to $4,000 of eligible spending made with Samsung.

For some people in the market for new tech, it will be relatively easy to max out this offer, but even if you have no interest in spending that much, you’ll still earn 5 bonus points/dollar on whatever you choose to spend, and that’s the beauty of Amex offers that don’t come with a spending requirement.

We value Amex points at a relatively conservative 1.5 cents each based on the value that we know we can get out of them with relative ease, and this means that to us, the bonus rebate on offer is equivalent to 7.5% on up to $4,000 of spending with a maximum effective bonus rebate of $300.

Obviously, a targeted cardholder would also earn at least 1 base point/dollar for any spending made with Samsung and when that’s factored in, our effective rebate would be 9% on up to $4,000 of spending with a maximum effective bonus rebate of $360.

There is another way to look at this offer. You can look at it in terms of what currencies you could convert your Amex points into.

Amex has a significant number of airline and hotel partners into which Membership Rewards points can be transferred in a 1:1 ratio, so you could view this promotion as one that offers targeted cardholders the opportunity to earn, for example, up to 20,000 bonus points/miles in Aeroplan, Etihad Guest, Flying Blue, or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.

Also, because Amex is currently offering a 30% bonus on points transferred over to British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus, you could view this promotion as one that allows targeted cardholders to earn up to 26,000 bonus Avios if the points are earned and converted over before the transfer bonus ends on 30 September 2024 – terms apply.

Keep in mind that even if you’re not a fan of BA, Iberia or Aer Lingus, Avios deposited to a BA account can be transferred across to Finnair and Qatar Airways with ease and at zero cost so, technically, you could view this offer as one that allows targeted cardholders to earn even more Avios with those airlines as well.

Targeted cards

I have this offer targeted to all my consumer Membership Rewards cards so I have saved it to the Platinum Card® from American Express because that’s the card that offers me the best purchase and returns protection.

I would have preferred to have seen it targeted to the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express as that would earn me 2 base points/dollar* + 5 bonus points/dollar on up to $4,000 of eligible Samsung spending (a rebate we would value at up to $420), but it doesn’t look like business Membership Rewards cards are being targeted.

Bottom line

American Express has launched a new offer for spending made with Samsung in which targeted cardholders can earn up to 20,000 bonus points. The offer is valid for spending made through the end of September which, coincidentally, is the same time frame for the current 30% Avios bonus so if you need to top up an Avios account, this offer may be particularly useful.
